I'm always surprised to see people bleaching seeds. I only had mold develop one time, and only on one tray. I wonder why that is.

I experienced mold in several spots in a tray that I did not bleach, and have had only one small spot of mold in the dozen or so trays that I have bleached. I think that it depends on the seed you get, perhaps some seed has less mold spores on the surface of the seed.

They actually taste a little like mustard greens and not like mature broccoli at all. Late to this discussion. But, can anyone tell me why harvest microgreens instead of just growing the plant out?
Is it a nutrient density thing? Like, taking a natural vitamin supplement without all the calories and roughage of a mature vegetable?

Fast production and higher nutrient density. Easy to grow indoors using shelves and low power lighting.

Just watched the latest video. How long do your microgreens keep? I usually harvest them when I'm going to use them. I've never tried to keep them more than a day.

They are fresh for three days, and OK for a few days more. I keep them refrigerated and try to dry them so they are not wet to the touch before packaging.

Yeah, I would pass on spirulina as well, considering there are safer options.

Thanks for the information. I have read reports of microcystin contamination of spirulina but obtaining it from a high-grade sources (assuming that one believes that such a thing is possible) may be a good option.

The basement temperature changes from about 60F to 80F, depending on outdoor temperature. At the lower temperature range sunflower shoots take 12 days to harvest, and at the upper range, 7 days to harvest.

If I can learn to compost the potting soil and reuse it, I should be able to get the cost down to $0.50 per day for about 130 grams per day of a microgreen mix which is designed to have the highest amount of nutrition possible.

I stay away from sprouts because of the potential issues. I'm not meticulous enough to attempt them safely. I stick to microgreens. I like them better anyway and they don't mind a little neglect.

Freezing sounds like a good idea, it should preserve nutrients. I have a dehydrater, and dried a Wellness Mix batch, but the sunflowers did not dry as quickly as the broccoli and radish. Next time I will dry only the broccoli. My goal is to create a powder which can be put into capsules. Drying may decrease the amount of nutrients, I don't know for sure.
I prefer fresh but would like to have a supply for travelling.

I only use my heat mats at night and only during the colder months of the year. I use natural sunlight and keep my seedlings next to the window so I need the mats when the temps are cold. I'm not sure if you'd need them in a room that maintains a constant temperature.

I am trying to get the sunflowers to mature earlier and to drop their hulls. I now have a piece of plywood over the heat mat, which should protect the tray from too much heat. I will start the next test batch tomorrow.
