Lost wallet - what to do now?

Post by TopHatFox »

I had 2 credit cards and 1 debit

2 health insurance cards

1 State ID

3 keys for my house

1 business card (job title, phone #, etc)

-----------

Thus far I've just cancelled the credit and debit cards.

Get new credit cards and debit card.

Get new health insurance cards

Get new state ID

Get new house keys. Consider changing locks if the address on your state ID was current

Get new wallet. Put cards in it. Don't lose wallet ever again.

Don't keep all valuables - keys, cards- in the same place.

Put a hold on your profile at all three credit agencies so they need your permission for hard inquiries.

In the future ...
--Keep a photocopy of both sides of every card in your wallet. Write the phone # for each that you would need to call in the event they were lost. Scan it so you can keep the info on your phone or a thumb drive as well.
--Get duplicate cards for everything you can (like medical). I do this every year.
--Keep a locator/tracker hidden in your wallet. Some now have proximity alarms.

I knew someone who kept a mailing label filled out with his name and address, a few high value postage stamps, and a note that said 'please mail back the wallet and keep the cash as thanks' tucked in his wallet. He figured if all the person had to do was stick the wallet into an envelope and drop it in a mailbox he was much more likely to get it back. It also meant that if someone stole it for the cash, they might still consider mailing it back.

Fun things I've been up to:

1. Froze my credit score with all three agencies (was going to do that anyway)
2. Filed and printed a police report
3. Made an appointment at the local DMV to get a new ID
4. Bought a new RFID-blocking wallet. Hung a tracker chip outside the wallet, and synched the chip to my phone

I still need to:

1. Call my health insurance company for a new code & card
2. Call my old state DMV to tell them I lost my ID
3. Get new keys

Remind me never to lose my wallet again : )
