I think as with many things in life "it depends". There's not a one-size-fits-all way to interact with other people. I would recommend fuller disclosure for closer friends and family than for strangers on the street, with a whole sliding scale between, but beyond that weigh up the pros and cons of sharing.

As for work, my advice is to keep your opinions to yourself. You may be *slightly* better placed in the identity politics stakes than I am due to your ethnic and academic background, but if you stick your head above the parapet with anything which makes the wrong person feel uncomfortable, you will be crucified professionally.
