Weird food combos that taste surprisingly good

I can't believe I've never heard about this one before but,

Peanut butter sandwiches with [cucumber] pickles! (The pickles cut the otherwise gooey feeling from the peanut butter alone.)

What other weirdness might I not know?

My current weird favorite: Leverpostej (kind-of-sort-of liver pate) with homemade chipotle sauce[1].


200 gr chipotle in adobe sauce, 1/2 dl apple cider vinegar, 2 tbsp brown sugar.

When I read that Jacob had never heard of peanut butter and pickles, I thought: he's obviously never been pregnant. Not that I have either, but that's sort of a classic.

Peanut butter and banana sandwiches (the best)
Peanut butter and raisin sandwiches (a bit dry, but good)
Peanut butter and apples. Not in a sandwich; just smear it on the apple slices.
Peanut butter spread on a large lettuce leaf, sprinkled with sugar, then rolled and eaten like a burrito. My grandmother used to give us these for lunch.
Peanut butter substituted for butter in apple crisp. Not really a weird one, but YUM.

Fbeyer: my Pennsylvania Dutch grandfather used to sprinkle salt on his watermelon and sugar on his fresh tomatoes. I haven't tried either because they're both great the way they arrive.

My brother in law and I called them CALLAMUCHAS!!![1] which is a thorough bastardization of the real Spanish word. A word that completely eludes me currently. Wednesday to Saturday we basically drank that shit while I completed my bachelor's project and he directed a movie. At one point I was running an experiment that had to be restarted every 7th hour, on the minute around the clock for four days. Whenever I left the lab I went to his studio and got drunk on CALLAMUCHAS, crashed on their couch, and colored frames for the movie since they were terribly behind schedule[2].

Yes. I've tried telling people to try this and every time I ask them to picture what it tastes like. See if they can make their brains develop the exact taste before tasting it and every one, without fail, has said: Wow, that tastes a LOT better than I thought it would!

100% agreed. Granted, when you think about it (just peanuts ground up into a butter!) it's not that weird.

You can add carbonated water/liquids to a lot of stuff you generally wouldn't think of and yield an improvement.

Always been confused about this one. It's tastes exactly what it sounds like! The syrup is the main thing.. but everyone that's eaten pork belly or bacon already knows that. Personally, I would rather just have spicy chicken and a biscuit (which you can put some honey/syrup on if it's not already sweet enough for you w/ the butter).

Guess all this stuff is just obviously biased depending on how/where/when you grew up. It's just a known thing to do to put some salt on there, if you want!


When I was younger, I seem to remember thinking Mexican street/snack food was really weird! Like lime, hot spice, mayo, butter, etc. Now it seems pretty normal.

My favorite mixed drink is a fresh margarita with mango, blueberries, and lots of basil, with chili powder on the rim. Does that count? It's hard to tell what people think is weird. Seems normal compared to a Bloody Caesar.

Well, what is "weird" to one is normal to another.

Prosciutto and ripe cantaloupe is quite good if you misers would ever open your wallet for prosciutto.
I like cheese toast with chocolate chips on top.
My submission under the peanut butter category is the fluffernutter.
Cheddar cheese makes its way into unexpected dishes sometimes, e.g. cheddar cheese apple pie, corn and cheese ice cream (Philippines)
Speaking of the Philippines, halo-halo is tasty and has some... unusual combinations of things like chickpeas and purple yam (it's a dessert)

My most recent weird food find is aquafaba, which by virtue of it being an ingredient makes every dish you make with it a weird combination. Aquafaba is bean juice (basically, the cooking liquid of beans - usually chickpeas) that is used to substitute for eggs in a dish. I've had eggless, bean-juice based macarons and meringues, and both are tasty!
