I first learned about mixing red wine and Coca-Cola in Taiwan. Try it sometime.
Wait: you had to go to Taiwan to try this? I've mixed wine with diet Coke, diet Sprite, club soda...and of course ice. Ice is your friend when the wine comes from a box (my preference, otherwise known as cardboardeaux).

I remember being in a motel room with DH in the middle of American Siberia (next to a WalMart), trying to open a bottle of wine without a wine opener. Great hilarity ensued. DH suggested running over to WalMart for a cheap wine opener, to which I replied that a cheap WalMart wine opener is a box cutter. More hilarity. We finally managed to pry it open with some sort of utensil, filtered the bits of cork through our teeth and drank. It really would have been better with diet Coke.

Pears and cheese is a great unusual combo.
Strawberry and balsamic vinegar
Baked pork shank: add an apple and some red wine at the beginning of the cooking process

Did you know that every time people do this, an Italian dies? :D
@FBeyer: the Spanish word for this abomination is Calimocho

How about what my DH calls German pancakes? Mix flour, water, cooked/diced bacon (or something else salty and smoky like prosciutto)and an egg if you're feeling fancy. Cook on a griddle and eat with vinegar-dressed chopped lettuce. He made this for breakfast countless times. It's a great combination of tastes.

In 1985, the populations of Italy and France were nearly identical. Now France is about 6 million bodies ahead. I'm so sorry for my contribution to this trend, though I think Tyler has to share some blame. :P

This thread is making me feel like I might go into anaphylactic shock. Mixing peanut butter into unexpected foodstuffs, not good!!!

However, due to my allergy, I know that anything that you would fix or mix with peanut butter will likely also work with cream cheese.

This is more of a preparation thing than a combination thing, but PB&J sandwiches are very good when you fry them in a little butter. Just like you would prepare a grilled cheese sandwich. So warm and cozy.

Banana & bean dip. Start with some combo of refried beans, whole beans, salsa, cheese... for spices / flavor profile think South American rather than Mexican taco seasoning. Then add some banana or a sweet plantain and serve with tortillas.

@the Cola-Red wine abomination: in Germany, this is known as either "Korea" or "Kalte Muschi" (=cold pussy, yes it can be understood both ways). But just as you don't use a nice Tallisker Whiskey to make Whsiky-Coke, you also don't use a good wine for this crime against all that is holy (so the Italians should be safe!)
I tried the peanut butter and pickle combo, it was really good! :o

My combo contributions:
- carrot and chocolate
- salted potato chips and tabasco sauce
- mango with salt
- use fresh salty popcorn as cereals with milk
- cinnamon bun or waffle with avocado
- grapefruit with fresh cracked black pepper

Chicken and waffles

It's a southern thing. And yes, it's amazing.
Actually, chicken and waffles originated in Harlem, NY during the 1930's. Apparently jazz musicians would get off work late at night/early in the morning and want to eat--but sometimes you want breakfast, sometimes you want dinner.... a local restaurant called Wells Supper Club started offering chicken and waffles to sort of bridge the gap between breakfast and dinner.

I love chicken and waffles. Gotta put the syrup over both.

My favorite weird food combos--apple pie and cheddar cheese, apple pie and chicken gravy (my grandfather's thing--but dang it's good).

Certain food combinations just go together--pork and fried apples, chocolate cake and potato chips....
