Affordable anti-virus software...

Post by chenda »

My Norton has just expired and they are asking for £50 to renew it which seems ridiculous.

Does anyone know of a cheaper/free alternative?
Haven't got time to do a lot of research and don't like been unprotected....

Haven't research the best free software recently, but this is what I'm using:

Are you running Windows. Windows Defender is free and supported by Microsoft.

Another vote for Windows Defender. Simple, effective, and free.

Be careful before installing any 3rd party AV software.

There are a lot of "rogue" antivirus programs that pretend to be virus scanners, but are malware in disguise (and sometimes ransomeware which will encrypt your files and demand bitcoins in order to decrypt them.)

I support this one, even though I don't have my own Windows machine anymore. A few years ago, AVG was awful when compared to Antivir free. Nowadays I don't know how they are vs one another.

Another vote for AGV free. Used it for years now. Other than constantly asking you to update (Hoping you'll miss a click and get the "not free" version) it's worked just fine.

I used to use Comodo. Windows defender and common sense are best combination. Using Mc affee or norton is asking for viruses.

In case you do opt to not use a free antivirus, instead of shelling out the full price on the official website, look for the antivirus of your choice on eBay. Brand names such as NOD32 or Avira are available there for around 10€/$ for a one-year license.
