Crooks have been griping about the crow bar problem since the dawn of crookery. :D

A flat pry-bar might fit in the corner of a bag. But you'll like a wrecking bar better....

LOL ... it's hard not to look guilty when you're holding a crow bar. And I'm usually bloody when I'm working, which only makes me look doubly guilty.

OK, that was funny. It reminds me of a quote from Iggy Pop that I repeat to myself when I'm working on stuff: "I bleed a lot." He was talking about writhing around on stage over broken glass, but it applies to my mechanic work too.

Ha. That video is backwards. We bleed because we're focused on what we're doing and don't pay attention to the pain.

Specifically for the car, consider:
12V DC phone/device charger (make sure that there's at least one outlet that works with the ignition off)
Tow cable, jump start cables
Extra alternator belt if you have a reasonable car where it's changeable by hand
Extra light bulbs, fuses

Bought for a far more prosaic purposed, but I've been pleasantly surprised by the strength and utility of this 8" Pry Bar

@jenypenny

I'm not sure how big this pry par in question is, but you can take a piece of conduit http://www.homedepot.com/p/Allied-Tube- ... /100400405 and place one end in a vise to get your flat end cheater bar. The other end will stay round.

The too obvious solution: Grind/cut down the heavy duty prybar to the desired length.

@ffj--Ah, that's what I need. I don't have a proper vice though. Gotta ask around. I'm sure my brother has one in his shop.

@Ego--I want that! And I'm most definitely putting it in my next book. Such a great prepper tool. I really like that there's a hole at the pointed end so it can be attached to a rope and used in all kinds of devious ways. Cool find.

Today I tidied up my emergency tool bag that I carry in my trunk. I've been meaning to post up its contents for awhile now so here it is. Since I mostly use my car to get around, the bag is nearby 90% of the time. Kind of EDC. Although I've used it in a pinch, I mostly use it on other peoples' cars and homes when I'm out and about.

Image

It's an old computer bag I picked up free someplace long ago. Many compartments and made of sturdy nylon.

Image

Tools to good to have when driving a 34 year old car. Wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, hammer, drill with bits in handle, taper reamer, hacksaw, bolt cutters, wire cutters, files, hex/torx keys, tubeless tire repair tools, cheater bar.

Image

Glue and other goodies. Five minute epoxy, high strength epoxy, steel putty epoxy, rubber cement, tire patches, zip ties, electrical tape, stainless steel wire, self fusing rubber tape, hose clamps, glass filled epoxy.

Image

Tie downs and other gear. Ropes, paracord, head light, blue nitrile gloves, magnesium fire starter.

Image

Electrical Tools. Voltmeter, backup voltmeter pen, butane soldering iron with blowtorch head, solder, wire crimpers, diesel glow plug.

Image
Image

Some stuff from my door pocket. Swiss Army Knife, baby wipes, Lithium ion powered flashlight, tanto knife, pepper spray, pen, iphone charger, stuff jacket windbreaker, sunglasses. Not shown are another bag of hose scraps, light bulbs, fuses, oil, water, transmission fluid, diesel filters, fix-a-flat, old fleece jacket, baseball cap and the giant Mercedes Benz built in first aid kit.

Has anyone seen a Tigerlady in person? It looks cool, kinda Wolverine-like.

I can't believe they actually advertise that it's designed to collect DNA. :?

Whoa. That looks like it is kind of close to brass knuckles. I guess it is legal.

Reminds me of a girl I knew growing up who used a razor blade with a matchstick through the middle held between her index and middle finger. If she hadn't been bragging about her weapon I would have never seen it.

Have not see the tiger lady. It has the advantage that it is instantly ready. I guess there are so many variables in these things. How ferociously a tiger lady can attack, surprise, determination of the attacker. I think I'd lose interest in doing anything but running home to my momma if I got scratched on the cheek by that thing.

I think in most of these attack situations fighting back is the most important thing to do. Even if it means stabbing with a sharpened pencil then running.

Scary claws Jenny. Just in time for Halloween.

Edit - recently added a 3M P100 mask to my trunk kit. Love it for cleanup work at my mom's 100 year old home.

I took this photo of the stuff I carry while travelling when we were in Morocco last year. I thought for sure I had posted it here but I guess I was wrong. Here goes...

Image

1. Two Outdoor Research (OR) hats. One is a foldable visor. The other is the Helios Sun Hat. Both are swap meet finds.
2. Patagonia Houdini jacket
3. PacSafe Travel Wallet with chain
4. American Optical Pilot prescription sunglasses & Moscot Lemtosh prescription eyeglasses. Got the AOs at the Swap Meet and the others on ebay.
5. Pelican hard shell waterproof camera case with internet dongle and thumb drive. The case broke twice. Pelican guarantees it for life.
6. Klean Kanteen with a Cuisipro stainless steel tea infuser inside
7. Petzl e+LITE tiny headlamp. Swap meet.
8. A few years ago in Kathmandu the zipper on my PacSafe moneybelt broke so I bought an inexpensive waterproof zipper bag in the market and sewed the belt to it. Still going strong.
9. Pelican tablet case. Dell Venue 8 Pro with bluetooth keyboard, mouse, stand and spare battery.
10. Vaccination certificate, International Driver's Permit and cash.
11. Patagonia Lightweight Travel Courier bag with a Suunto clipper compass

- Not shown, but I always have my Leatherman Wave.

DH uses the same wallet ... in DC lol.

A headlamp is my next purchase, preferably a waterproof one (I'm looking at you, jacob :x ). In the meantime, I tucked a book light in with my stuff. I could always fasten it to my head with a bandana in a pinch.

@sclass-I have no idea if it's legal. I'm assuming it's not in NJ where I spend a lot of time. I should ask my local police before I buy it.

@jp - I recommend these to go along with it: https://www.amazon.com/Malmsten-AB-Orig ... B007SC3Y9M
(They may or may not be shipped with foam pads. Do not put the foam pads on. They take up very little space and are useful for other things, like dust. Even if they don't look like it, they're comfortable for hours.)

The problem with headlamps is that 99% of the time I need a very faint light or, even better, a faint red light to see in the dark without waking my (constantly!) sleeping partner. My God, can she sleep! Oh... the difficulties of living in a studio. Anyhow, a faint light is also useful for reading a book whereas a bright light is nearly impossible to read by. The other 1% of the time I want something that will burn superman's retinas, make the entire trail visible and allow me to see the bear's eyes reflecting back at me from 200 yards. But I use it so infrequently that I question the value of having it, until I hear what sounds like a bear and go digging in my pack for it.

@Ego - I've given up trying to find the perfect headlamp. It's turned into the total domain of engineering students with a prepper bent, a lathe, and LLC dreams. So many options. Very hard to keep track of. Suffice to say though, you're looking for exactly the same features that sailors tend to look for. Maybe they've found something. Otherwise, the standard best of the worst go-to is the tikka tactical.

So using what I'm using now -- a book light or flashlight in a bandana -- might be satisfactory? My flashlight is on a lanyard so it's easy to carry, and the book light can bend enough to fit into my pack.

I like the goggles idea. We have several pairs and I never thought to throw them into the packs. Seems like a no-brainer place to store them in the winter at least.

Now that bike lights and headlamps have converted to USB rechargables, I am tempted to learn SClass-style repair and battery replacement. I feel like they make the light itself bombproof, knowing that it has a built in obsolescence with the battery.

Not much to learn Ego. Thanks to all the inexpensive lithium ion chargers out there for the toy RC model world you can get a 1,2 or 3 cell charger for a couple of dollars on eBay. Plug it in red light = charging, green light = done. Batteries can be salvaged from old phones or sourced cheap from RC hobby shops online. The cylindrical laptop 18650 cells I salvaged from laptops are not used much anymore in modern laptops. The key is use the appropriate li ion charger so you don't blow yourself up.

The headlamp I show in my car kit cost me $2.50 on eBay. I bought a bag of them for stocking stuffers. The middle white led is a super bright die...I haven't measured it but I suspect it is a Watt or more. If you hit the button again it goes to a dimmer power conserving mode. If you hit it again, the white turns off and two dim red ones on the sides turn on. Hit it again and they blink at a fifty percent duty cycle. Hit it again and it shuts down...which is a problem because if you don't shut it down you drain the AAA cells.

It was super cheap and the quality is good enough for me to use while up and about. It is water resistant too...it can be dunked in a glass of water and keep running. Maybe not reliable enough for going up against bears though.

Check out Fenix headlamps. My friend has one with all the features you're looking for, plus trans-cranial strap which I like. I've used it for nighttime reading while she's asleep. HL35 might be one to look at.

@Ego - Your requirements look similar to mine and I'd recommend to have a look at Black Diamond headlamps. I was looking for something waterproof, taking standard batteries, powerful main light + small red LED for non-intrusive illumination in hostels, reading at night, etc.. I've ended up with Black Diamond Storm headlamp and I'm happy with it: http://blackdiamondequipment.com/en_GB/ ... NALL1.html

I plan on putting a back together for my trunk as I go through one of the garages, instead of getting new stuff. I know its all in there. I just need to find it :)
