A friend of mine recently coined Bielefeld as small Berlin of the West (as in West Germany).
While that might be somewhat of an overstatement, Bielefeld should be
- big enough to be accessible,
- small enough to be a little more inexpensive than bigger alternatives and
- central enough to be reachable from most of the cities within Germany and maybe also possible to be reached by our friends from the Netherlands, Belgium and maybe even Denmark.
Would anyone be interested?
And yes: Legend has it, that Bielefeld doesn't exist

Haha - almost. At least you were right in terms of similar latitudes.
For clarification, here's a map. By central, I meant it is roughly in the middle between Amsterdam and Berlin, Hamburg and Frankfurt:
