Do you listen to podcasts? If so, who do you listen to and why

Post by TheRedHare »

Hi all, I'm interested in what podcasts anyone listens to. Although I'm interested in any podcast topic, I'm more focused on ones dealing with investing, economics, and trends.

Bloomberg Masters in Business with Barry Ritholtz is excellent, weekly interviews with some very bright fellows, usually in the economics/finance world but not only. Among the guests people like Jack Bogle, Alan Shaw, Robert Shiller, Bill McNabb etc etc

The Freakonomics pocast is at times very interesting, depending on the subject

I also like Bill Simmons' podcast and Zach Lowe's (I'm a fan of the NBA), Simmons' is funnier and more "entertaining" while Lowe's, while never boring, has I think a better grasp of the subtleties of the game

No. I already typed my rant for the day about it in a different post, but, for me, listening to a person talk is a very poor investment of time if the goal is to learn something. For entertainment they're fine sometimes.

I only ever listen to podcasts while doing something else with my body on system 1, i.e. while walking to and back from work or washing dishes. Reading instead would not be possible. Maybe give it a go while you're commuting to work? Also, if you're listening from youtube, you can increase the speed to 1.25 or 1.5 times (I tried 2x but it's almost not possible to distinguish words).

I sometimes listen to The Tim Ferriss Show, because he does get some interesting guests but I find it too dense/content-rich and too shallow at the same time to actually apply any of it.

Also, I used to listen to the Half Hour Intern, because it was interesting to walk into someone else's shoes work-wise for half an hour/an hour.

I have been recommended Hardcore History but haven't actually listened to it yet.

I also speed up the podcasts, sometimes up to 2x, and use it more to fill in gaps when I am bored and cannot do anything else than actually actively learning from them.

I'll list out my favorites:

* 99 Percent Invisible - short bite-sized histories focused on design. See "Roman Mars city flags" on YouTube for a fun TED talk/podcast by the showrunner.
* Imaginary Worlds - thematic investigations into science fiction.
* Talks with Tyler - Tyler Cowan, economist, talks to interesting people. Intelligent conversation.
* Choose FI - breezy twice-weekly talk show with two Mustachians. Every so often a good guest comes on, otherwise this can be sped up 2x and makes good background noise while washing dishes.
* Mad Fientest - infrequent but excellent FI podcast, good questions and informative guests.
* Radiolab/Invisibilia - long thematic discussions, very well-produced.

I listen to a bunch of very specific history podcasts and treat "The Teaching Company" lectures as podcasts too, but in each of those cases these are not "easy listening". I've heard Hardcore History recommended, didn't like it much myself. There are constant discussions about it among historians that devolve into "it's inaccurate" vs "it gets people interested in history". As someone already interested in history that makes it a no-go.

I listen to Pardon my Take. It's a sports podcast, focused on the NFL. I'm not super interested in either of those things but I find the guys funny. Great to listen to while preparing a meal or something.

Joe Rogan. I follow the UFC religiously and Joes' podcast and advice on life/relationships/health had literally pulled me from a depression in my early 20s.

I occasionally listen to Carl Richard's Behavior Gap. He reminds me of Ron Howard for some reason. A guy that as much as I try, I just can't find a way to sustain a real, deeply felt hatred. He's also genuinely optimistic. I should have recommended him to Top Hat Fox before he drove off in his carriage in search of more lawful camps.
