Breakup Songs

Post by Biscuits and Gravy »

Hit me with your favorite breakup songs. Currently stuck on Deana Carter’s “Did I Shave My Legs For This?”, which... might not resonate with most of y’all. Much obliged.

Oh no. This depends on how you like to process emotions. I like to allow myself to feel sad, so:

Adele - Someone Like You
Adele - Hello
Taylor Swift - I Knew You Were Trouble
Reamonn - Tonight
Deep Purple - When a Blind Man Cries
Hammerfall - Remember Yesterday
Colbie Caillat - Try
Green Day - Boulevard Of Broken Dreams
Johnny Cash - Hurt
Guns N' Roses - Don't Cry
Metallica - Welcome Home

Good luck!

err hmmmm that's a strange classification but lemme see... some of this are not explicitly about breakups maybe some are just implied some are impending ones some are bad relationships or regrets or longing or whatever. also, some for the laughs.

not sure if any of this is your kind of music but it's stuff i like.

cat power's cover of "kingsport town"
sleater kinney - one more hour
billie holiday or chet baker covers of "how deep is the ocean"
L7 - it's not you
the ramones - the kkk took my baby away (lol)
joy division - love will tear us apart
led zeppelin cover of "babe i'm gonna leave you"
some 80s lady who married john mcenroe - goodbye to you (childhood memories, lol)
the velvet underground & nico - femme fatale, there she goes again
the velvet underground - pale blue eyes
the kinks - better things
the pretenders cover of the kinks' "stop your sobbing"
jacques brel- ne me quitte pas (abject begging, but somehow great)
talking heads - once in a lifetime
johnny thunders - you can't put your arms around a memory
bob dylan - it ain't me babe
violent femmes - kiss off, gone daddy gone
half japanese - one million kisses
pixies - bone machine
le tigre - tko
bratmobile - girl germs, gimme brains
excuse 17 - i'd rather eat glass, forever fired
peaches - stick it to the pimp
miss kittin - frank sinatra (this is a bit of a metaphorical leap hahahaa, but it works in my mind)
stereo total - anti-love song
fiona apple - fetch the bolt cutters, under the table

[i've been adding cuz you got me thinking lol]

Nobody's Girl by Bonnie Raitt always worked, although maybe not a breakup song per se, maybe more of of a near miss vibe.

Haha, true, it sounds weird and like I'm a serial breaker-upper or something, when... this is actually my first breakup.

@Crusader These days, I like to process emotions as they come and head-on. Wrt to the breakup, I like to allow myself to feel defiant, but I feel everything else too: grief, shame, guilt, disappointment, anger, frustration, hope, relief, etc. My "favorite" feeling to arise from this is defiance.

Thanks for all the responses! It's keeping me busy.

I feel the same sometimes and need music that makes me relate. Not everyone's cup of tea, but early (the first 3) Children of Bodom albums do it for me, with this song being my favourite:

I love Alexi's guitar and carefree self destructive attitude.
(a lighter version of the same theme would be Rage against the machine - Killing in the name, but they just don't do much for me musically)

When you're not really sad about the break-up because you were never really happy in the relationship, and the only thing keeping you together was mutual delusion, I turn to James Bay's Let It Go

I always thought Bob Dylan's Boots of Spanish Leather was one of the most poignant songs ever written about a relationship. There are a few modern covers that do it justice as well.
