I am amazed by your guys' progress and don't want to hijack the thread - but what's your secret sauce to lowering the SWR?

2011: $35,000 debt

2016: debt free, no savings

2017: 100% SWR

2018: 50% SWR

(Projected 4% SWR ~2025)

is SWR being calculated via spending as a % of financial assets? and it's coming down as assets grow/spending decreases?

I asked this same question way upthread:

Is there a formula for this? Here's what I came up with (I don't have a full year of expenses yet so I have to extrapolate average monthly expenses):
Average monthly expenses * 12 / FI Assets = SWR

My results:
$2322.89 * 12 / $90,768.30 = 30.7%

1/1/2011 - 120%
1/1/2012 - 80.0%
1/1/2013 - 58.5%
1/1/2014 - 36.7%
1/1/2015 - 20.7%
1/1/2016 - 14.4%
1/1/2017 - 8.8%
1/1/2018 - 6.4%

4/1/2018 - 5.85%

I went back and used actual spending/portfolio values all the way back to Jan 2014, when I started tracking that stuff to the dollar. SWR is based on trailing twelve months of actual spending vs. actual portfolio value.

I'm challenging myself to gain a wheaten level and reduce my SWR by 1% simply by lowering spending.

I only even worked for half the year; thanks Bitcoin!

SWR is about four years into the future (broke through 6, 5, and 4% before I could even do much thinking) versus my previous projections. It's especially great since I doubt I would have stuck to that high-wage path for these next four years (it's been a sort of anti-sequence-of-returns-risk)!

For 2018, I've actually convinced the GF to share the van with me (i.e. we both stop paying rent) come August. That's the reason the SWR projection is better (with no income/savings planned; granted I didn't include any van-fitting costs).

I've since upped my estimates a lot, as I am aiming for being able to live alone in my current city ($$$) and higher spending on interests, so my SWR % has sadly risen. But on the original target which is still doable, I'm sitting pretty at 2.25%. I think I might be suffering from OMY (OMD?), but then again, I still enjoy my current job a lot :). I will probably die with a mountain of unspent money.

Since I last wrote, I have spent months in spreadsheets trying to magically work out how to get to FIRE sooner than the 2-3 years that I was hoping to initially. I created about 10 different complicated spreadsheets with formulas, auto colours & flashing bells. Even then, I did not have a clear solution that would propel me on the FIRE path.
Then I reluctantly engaged an expert to work through the options and within the first hour, he pointed out the most obvious opportunity for me to realign my investments to get maximum passive income, as I was getting less than 0.05% at the time.

So now I am at basic FIRE level, I can pay for the bare basics through the passive income. The next step I am working on is getting to a point where all expenses are paid for & then I plan to stop my consulting work as that is a 50 hour a week commitment at the moment!

Today 14.9%. Hoping to bring that down some by lowering spending.

I haven't tallied up actual expenses for the past year, but I'd like to have more spending when I become FI, so my SWR isn't based on actual expenses, but desired spending level.

Currently that sits at 18.75% and it came down below 20% earlier this year.
