Haha made me chuckle, but you are onto something in that the problem can be narrowed down.

I am conducting a personal experiment now where I try to go down from BMI 24 to BMI 21 and see what the difference in general performance and well-being is (not a very controlled experiment and largely based on introspection, but nevertheless). I guess the 1kg fat reserves for someone with BMI 21 are different from fat reserves for someone with BMI 24. And maybe the well being and performance difference of have/not have the 1kg fat are going to be much greater that carrying 8000kcal on one's body 'just in case'.
