I need help - was this the forum where people were discussing clotting as an issue? If there was a paper or quote I'd like to grab it. I've heard from elsewhere that there was pan-agglutination going on when looking into giving blood to nCovid patients.
May be this one.

We've spent too much time trying to standardize medicine and create workflows instead of focusing on the art of medicine.

@Augustus Interesting. Obviously this would be a blood test, ideally a venous test since a finger prick may not be as accurate.
The IgM would indicate your recent exposure but you'd need a range which isn't easy to come by - maybe your buddy can help you there. IgG would indicate prior exposure.
You could have had the infection but your IgG may have cleared already - as in, you may not longer be immune to it.
This is all assuming that the test is totally accurate, which most IgG/IgM's for most infections aren't.

The test itself is unlikely to be contaminated.
We have plenty of reports of patients who have no symptoms but test positive for COVID or their chest CT, which was done for other reasons, shows obvious signs of the infection.
As for the result interpretation, I suspect there is a place on their site or in the package to interpret it.
But if your IgM is positive then it means likely recent exposure. If the IgG is positive then it means that you have potentially developed immunity to the virus.

Right, that's always the tough thing about information gathering, will the result you obtain be accurate? Next, what will you do with the information. I have lines out the door of patients angry that they cannot get tested. Those who can get tested are upset that it takes 4-5 days to get a result. And yet I don't how the test would change management when the reliability of current tests aren't even that high. Even if they were 100% sensitive/specific, there is no treatment, so the information would only help in very few specific circumstances.

NZ has 54 new coronavirus cases today. Total now 1160. This is the smallest increase since the lockdown.

NZ numbers also include a lot of probable cases so probably overstates the number. Probable are cases which test negative for the virus but people have similar symptoms.

Still only 1 death. So a tiny death rate of 0.09%.

241 people have recovered.

2% community transmission detected. So its mostly coming in from overseas.

Almost 3000 tests yesterday and 42,800 tests so far (0.89% of population)

The govt is FINALLY indicating we might be quarantining everyone coming into NZ. THANK GOD. That was well overdue. Needs to happen NOW.

Thanks @ego
I grabbed that link. I must admit the complexity of biology quickly overwhelms my 'back of the envelope' physicist brain.

If only so many people weren't dying, this would be an interesting problem.

Lockdown has pushed doubling period to 4.1 days. At this rate we'll cross 15k infected when the 21 day lockdown is supposed to be lifted on 14th. Toaster sized ventilators under production. Randomized testing of 100000 people to be done in the capital's hotspots.

@7w5 Are you in your cabin now or did you stay urban ?

Unfortunately, still urban. We decided the cabin was still too rough to allow us to stay isolated. So, I am right in the thick of a hot spot, but personally very well isolated since 3/12. I will likely move to cabin during “lull.”

Re baby names, they'll likely morph into the closest approximation that makes sense in Sanskrit:
Covid -> kovida , adjective meaning proficient/skilled (in)/versed (in)/clever/learned (in)/experienced (in)/skillful
Corona -> karuṇā, feminine gender meaning mercy/empathy/pity/compassion
Hanta -> hanta, indeclinable particle expressing exclamation/inception meaning yes/very well then/indeed/now/very well! now/so be it.

The tests came from China
Just FYI -- the UK found that the antibody tests they bought from China are mostly worthless, resulting in both false positives and false negatives. So be careful reading too much into your results either way. https://www.newsweek.com/uk-says-millio ... ts-1496506

Data from China where men were much more likely to die holds for the UK - almost twice as many deaths in each age bracket (other than 85+ where there are substantially more women overall as men die earlier):

Image
Prof Philip Goulder, an expert in immunology at University of Oxford, said: "It is becoming increasingly recognised that there are substantial differences in the immune system between males and females and that these have significant impact on outcome from a wide range of infectious diseases.

"The immune response throughout life to vaccines and infections is typically more aggressive and more effective in females compared to males."

This could be down to women carrying two copies of the X chromosome, compared to the single X and a Y that men have.

A number of critical immune genes are located on the X chromosome.

Apologies as I'm very late to this thread; but is the thinking that this coronavirus was first identified in China in December still widely accepted by the epidemiologists, et al.?
