Thanks for the replies everyone. These were a good range of perspectives, and it made me realize the real problem isn't that I have nothing to do at work. It's that I have nothing to do AND the culture at work is hardcore "You will be in your chair 9-5. No exceptions." So I often get trapped with nothing to do AND no way to alleviate it.

Anyway, I've come to realize that there are a million other jobs out there that won't have this exact problem. They'll have other problems, sure, but the boredom is starting to take an extreme toll on me. So I'm gonna get my resume together and apply some other places that aren't so micromanagement.

Great strategy. I haven't worked for one of those "butt in your chair" companies yet so I find myself fortunate. I recently found myself interviewing at a company that seemed like that so I decided to run away. Far away.
