I had this same dilemma, worked up to foreman, approached a few times to go into management. That's the bottom of a new pay scale, and I like money, so I was always tempted.

But I never took the job. Telecom is shrinking, upward mobility is... Nearly stagnant. This is not an environment that rewards performance. It is an environment that rewards patience, and networking, persistence, gamesmanship, and all my other weak points.

I was not ready to change my personal and professional life to accommodate this "growth opportunity". So I passed each time. I don't regret it.

If going into a position that requires skills one doesn't possess, be determined to aquire them, with a priority, or go elsewhere.

Anything else is a disservice to yourself.

Say yes. Acquire the skills, follow the money. Any jocular banter you are on the receiving end of is just noise and probably nothing there is worth losing your spaghetti over. You can always find some other easy assistant PM job.

They can’t take away your birthday.
