Despite all the compliments, I feel the problem is still not quite solved yet. I just had some slowness moments some minutes ago. Bluehost is cpu throttling us because it looks like we are using too much cpu at times. There are still things that can be optimized. I'm still looking into this. Please report me any slowness or downtime if you see some.

All of you users that are subscribing the rss feed since before the software migration: you should now have your feed back because I installed a redirection to the new address. But please be kind and help save processing in our server. Please update your feed address subscribing to the following address:

Looking awesome, thanks Bigato! The best part of this new software IMO is that the forum messages are a lot less narrow. So when I post a long-form essay on determinism, it doesn't stretch on to infinity!

My only suggestion would be to change the text in the top banner from "ERE Forum" back to "Early Retirement Extreme Forum", mostly because I enjoyed having coworkers see that when they come into my cubicle. ;)

People, I consider the job done for now. Let me show you why.

For the first time since I started to look, our hosting provider is not cpu throttling us anymore.
No CPU throttling in this account in the last 24 hours, it says!

Take a look at the load time for the blog:
Image

... And for the forums!
Image

Not bad, huh???

Off course, it's not always this quick, since it depends on the traffic at the moment. But it's quite fast most of the time!

And now, the most dramatic of all. Let's take a look at a graphic showing the outbound traffic for the last seven days. Keep in mind that I did the effective migration Friday night:
Image

What does this graphic means? Before the migration we had a very irregular serving of pages. Often the server would go down and nobody would be able to reach anything. Now, we have a much more stable situation where the users are being able to receive the pages they are asking for.

It may very well happen that with the enhanced experience, we start to get more and more traffic. I'm seeing already that all of you wonderful ere people are starting to write a lot more of content! If we get a lot more of traffic, in some point we will need some more intervention or upgrade in the system. But for now, I believe the situation is good enough. More optimizations can be done, but they will require intervention in the blog and in the wiki, and I don't plan on doing this soon, at least not now.

I am very happy that it was possible to reach this improvement with minimum offline time, and without needing to upgrade server! Once again we have an example where throwing money at a problem is not always the right answer. I also discovered a new-found respect for our hosting provider Bluehost and its "cpu throttling" feature. It's a feature much feared and blamed by a lot of users as you will see searching the internet about it, but it's a very innovative technical improvement that was brought about by the company president that also happens to be a linux kernel hacker. It's incredible that they can offer this quality of hosting charging so little. This feature punish the bad users and don't allow them to monopolize a shared server. My recent experience migrating and tweaking this system makes me believe that most users that you will find complaining about this just lack the knowledge or patience to learn to make their systems work properly.

I will still be here if things get bad again because of more traffic or other reasons, and will assist in migrating software and keeping it up-to-date. But after 40 hours of study, planning and preparation, 4 hours of execution and some more time tweaking things, I consider this job to be done and the situation to be stable. Thanks!!!

And thank you very much jennypenny who went to sleep a lot later that Friday to support me in the migrating process, allowing my mind to keep clear and focused on the critical job at hand.

Now a small plug if you allow me to. If any of you have some project that could benefit from my IT Consulting, don't hesitate to talk to me. :)

Now, just for kicks, compare the tweaked forum load time with google's!!! We are almost there, google, almost there!!!!

Hear, hear! Awesome job, Bigato and Jp!

Now, do we need to donate somewhere?

Dragline,

We won't need donations to upgrade the forum server because we won't need to upgrade at all!

For my work I don't accept donations because this work is my way to say thanks to Jacob for all that he helped to improve in my life.

But, if you or someone else can recommend my work, I will accept IT Consulting assignments!

I had trouble logging onto the new forum recently. It's working for me now (obviously), but I wanted to make this post for the record.

Once the forum changed, I was unable to log in. My old password was rejected whenever I tried to log on. I tried using the "I forgot my password" link several times over multiple days, but no e-mail was sent to me (I even checked my spam folder).

It finally started working on July 2, when the "I forgot my password" request actually did work, and I got an e-mail with a new password. Not sure if it was random or if someone actually fixed something.

There was an error in the configurations that was responsible for the system being unable to send emails. It's fixed now.

Negative modus on //
I have to get used to the new format. It's a little bit more work to find/check on the newest posts, particular on my phone while traveling (slow connection). That said, it is probably just me that have to get used to changes and check possibilities, color signs etc. Might also be better when I make it a habit to login when I am check the forum on my phone
// Negative modus off

In my experience the speed of the forum increased enormous. I am very glad the issue of down time seems to be solved. This community is great!

BIGATO: don't let my negative modus fool you, it's the only (minor) thing I could find and it is me who has sometimes a hard time to change certain habits. The forum is great, and (as a non-IT guy) I am impressed by your knowledge and problem solving ability!! All your work is very, very much appreciated.
So, the big message is: thank you, thank you!

Ah, and during typing my 1st message on this new forum, I see also it's much easier to insert URL, images, change font details etc. Great! :D

@Rube-- "View Active Topics" towards the top on the left-hand side will give you the newer postings. I have it bookmarked on my phone now to make it easier.

Hey bigato, is the features "wish list" available in a particular thread that I'm just missing somewhere?

Either way, I have another question/suggestion: is it possible with this theme to make html links show up in a different color? As it is now, they seem to be the same color as the rest of the text, so it's hard to really see a link until you hover over it.

I just want to offer my thanks and my respect bigato, great job! In the unlikely event that I find myself in the position of being able to recommend an IT consultant, you're on the top of my list

Thanks for making the transition. Great job, definitely a smooth transition. My old password worked and everything.

It's funny but I found the old forum nicer/friendlier in terms of the interface. The main page always showed the active/recent topics, and the user profiles showed all of their posts.

On this new forum software, the same functionality is there, but requires more clicking. I first had to discover the hard to see "View active topics" link near the top. Also, the user profile requires finding the hard to see and somewhat poorly worded "Search user’s posts" link. ("Show all posts by this user" seems more intuitive)

I don't expect any changes, but I just thought it's an interesting transition to go from a very homely forum to this more complicated forum :)

"View Active Topics" allows for the same lurking as before. You will see all of the recently active posts.

You can see which posts you haven't clicked if you're logged in. The square to the right of the post will be red instead of black.

Since a few people have mentioned having the links another color, couldn't we all just agree to make them another color when posting?? After you type the link, just select another color using any of the "font colour" choices to the right of the text box when posting.
