That was neat. I got sucked into watching a bunch of his videos (Ben Falk), now I'm gonna go to the library to get his book. I liked his stuff about rice farming up in Vermont, I thought rice was a warm weather crop, but it doesn't seem so at all.

@Kriegsspiel:

What I liked about that video was his explanation of how his practice informed his perspective which informed his practice ...

I think that is indicative of the "tinkering" mode of approaching any sort of complex practice such as permaculture or frugality or Renaissance lifestyle creation. OTOH, Falk's practice is a little too much in the mode of "5 Acres and Independence" for my liking. Anybody should be able to live permaculture right now from right where they are. You don't have to save up money and buy X acres first. I have to keep reminding myself of this because I live about a mile away from the lots that I own, so my Zones 0 and 1 are rented.

I just finished reading that issue!

I loved the picture through the tent door in Kyrgistan. But I realized I could get similar pictures in NE Oregon.... Certainly in Wyoming.

lol- Funny because mostly true. Sometimes men have good ideas for adventures themselves, and they will frequently happily take you with them if you are okay with cuddling in the back of a jeep and you don't wander off too frequently and you don't usually cry when people yell at you, BUT they hardly ever even listen to your very, very, very good ideas for adventure, and if you let them come with you on one of your adventures, they either just complain and complain or they totally try to take over YOUR adventure and ruin it. AND if you try to go off on an adventure on your own or with your sisters, they will call you on the phone all the time because they want you to come home and cook them some dinner, and then if you don't come home from your adventure in time to make dinner, they will pretend like they didn't notice the crock pot wasn't working and try to feed your children raw chicken.

Definitely funnier, and so typical of many women (or women of our age anyway).

Yeah, might be limited to those of us born before 1977-ish. Does anybody even use the expression "tomboy" anymore? I was talking to my sister about how there are two kinds of tomboys, the real ones being the girls of our generation who grew up in a large family of all brothers, and the fake ones (like us) who grew up in a large family of all girls.

Busking. This duo has been hanging out here all winter. They really are unusual and it took me a while to warm to their made-up language. Now we stop and listen to them perform a couple times a week. They seem to be making a pretty good living and they appear to be genuinely blissful.

Aleksander “Olek” Doba
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAYFPoofotw

He will begin his third Atlantic kayak crossing at age 69. This time he will start in New York and paddle east.
http://www.canoekayak.com/adventure-2/1 ... pj7jPM1.97
The third transatlantic expedition has one more important goal, quite unusual, but enviable. With this expedition, Aleksander Doba will be celebrating his 70th birthday, which comes in September of this year. He would like to prove that with strong determination, consistent action and persistence it is possible to overcome time and human weaknesses. Indomitable spirit and youthful imagination, pushing for the realization of dreams and plans, despite the passage of years, remain unchanged for Olek.

“95 percent of people die in bed,” he says. “So why lie down?”
