The in-laws know I've picked a date for early retirement. They're now getting used to the idea that it's for real and not too far in the future.
Since there's a gap between exiting the workforce and beginning my pension, mother-in-law then proceeded to ask, "what will you live on?"
"Savings."
"Oh."
Dear wife piped up with, "Or I'll just work as a cashier at Safeway."
"Oh."

@C40 - DW was messing with her mom. Her mom lives in a different world and the rest of us let her.
@BPA - Father-in-law probably ended up sympathizing with her while also managing to defend our choices. He's wonderfully diplomatic that way. Either that or he suffered in silence while she expressed concern and wonderment.
They do have our best interests at heart and have been generous over the years.
