Anyway, what would you consider sensible and what would be cheap in terms of maintaing value of the house in such place?

You would have a good 3 or 4 months of snow cover. I'd say insulate your pipes, especially if they run through unheated areas like a garage or crawlspace. Keep your gutters clean to dispose of water when ice melts. Keep your attic cool so that the heat from your house doesn't melt the snow which then refreezes in the gutter as it isn't as warm as the roof. This is called an ice dam.

Do not underestimate how much water and snow can damage a perfectly good home especially if it goes through frequent freeze/thaw cycles that can occur in dfb zones. This is why having good overhangs on a home is probably one of the best means of safeguarding it.
