Just thought I would bring attention to a website - The Field Lab

It's written by John Well's who moved out to the desert, and lives off grid and off the beaten path.
Recently he's been working on a bike-clothes washing machine, looks rather promissing (he has photo's posted) as well as building a green house, and a solar cooker. He's pretty good at explaining what he's doing and answering questions that are asked about his projects.
Been following it for about a year, some pretty useful information on it, for anyone thinking of off-grid living.
