A good and accessible introduction to peak oil/limits to growth. Most in this forum probably already know this info, but the format is highly accessible for newbies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WOUeVwP3z8

BIG SHAR [1982]
http://akademiapolskiegofilmu.pl/en/his ... g-shar/129
spoiler alert
The authors paint the portrait of a loner and outsider, a little old-fashioned, a “winner with the stigma of defeat in his eyes," who, having chosen a unique and unlawful path in his youth, decides to seek out the meaning of life in honing his skills. But even more important in "Big Shar" is the kind of duel between the master and his disciple, the old wolf and the pup, the great conman tired of life, equipped with life wisdom, experience, and a distanced attitude, and the impatient youngster fascinated by his personality, hungry for success and money, feverish with a nascent addiction.

serious spoiler alert
Drunk on his success, Jurek briefly loses sight of his master, but soon manages to find him. Convinced that he now possesses the secret, he asks Shar for help in organising a game against Denel. He takes a loan against his house and persuades his brother to steal a large sum from the sports club where he works. And then he loses everything. Was Shar in cahoots with Denel? After this decisive game, Big Shar is killed, while Jarek uses his last money to buy cigarettes and two new decks of cards...
as in
1. When you first start to play, you learn the rules and the various hands (cf. duration, terms, various yields i.e. YTM, and pricing).
2. Next level, the probabilities of the hands.
3. Next, the change of the probabilities based on cards seen and bids.
4. Next, you start playing the players (the tells).
5. Next, playing the players based on what you know about them (risk tolerance, bank roll, ...).
Most of the time, players will be unaware of higher levels.

movie presents additional levels:
-1. Physical violence
0. Dirty tricks

of course basing movie on first of the post wouldn't make it so popular .

Montana Homesteading in 1883.

Entertaining and also thought provoking for me in that I vastly underestimated the amount of work and time it takes to maintain livestock...

The Social Dilemma - It's a new documentary on Netlfix describing the sheer scale and problem of the disinformation/social media Internet landscape we now live in. You're probably aware of this info if you've spent time researching the topic already, but it's very relevant to today.

How timely. I just came to this thread to post this link. That documentary is awesome. I deleted Facebook last August but had trouble deleting Reddit. That documentary had me delete that account and app in less than 10 minutes after watching lol.

Unlike fb one can access almost all of reddit without an account, no? It wouldn't be wrong if I said I replaced fb addiction with reddit and reddit with this forum. I replaced my reddit account with one having firstname-lastname as username 5 years ago and the thought of having all posts/comments under my real name helped get rid of it like a charm. It can be difficult to control or even to consider it as addiction when it grows on you as a teenager with nothing pressing to do.

Anthony Bourdain's Raw Craft series. He basically interviews and hangs out with masters of different crafts. Each episode is 10-15 minutes long and all of them are interesting and worth checking out. My two favorite - because I like guitars and scotch:

An architect who gives it all up to become a luthier: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PC6Acydf0jc

A group of Scots perfecting single malt scotch whiskey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ds9jgvhjiUY

Michael Green - Why We Should Build Wooden Skyscrapers

Europe has been ahead of the US on building with cross-laminated timber for a while, but the industry is starting to gain momentum in the PNW. Could have important implications for the climate impacts associated with development and construction:

A new Adam Curtis series out on iPlayer today: Can’t Get You Out of My Head: An Emotional History of the Modern World
https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radi ... curtis-bbc

Curtis’s overarching thesis is made clear at the beginning, perhaps to avoid accusations that a documentary-maker, too, can be one of the tricksters and manipulators of reality at which his creation is about to take aim. “The ultimate hidden truth of the world is that it is something we make. And could just as easily make differently – David Graeber 1961-2020” runs the opening caption.

Ancient Futures book/film by Helena Norberg-Hodge. About the people of Ladakh living in a more traditional society. Particularly, about their transition from...sustainable and joyful society without crime/poverty/inequality/violence/war to....one where that is happening.

People are trusting and also trustworthy in Laddakh. I heard on a podcast by a person traveling from Laddakh to the southern tip of India on foot relate his experience (in Hindi):

"It was evening and I wanted to make a call home. There was no signal, no mobile tower, no person in sight. A woman returning from the mountainous terrain saw me. After talking she understood the situation and told she was herself returning from making a call towards the edge where there is some signal. She took me there, I talked to my family and by then it was dark but she brought me along with her back to the village."

Now that Laddakh has been separated from Kashmir, hopefully its culture will be preserved and not be associated with the latter's religious extremism.

@the_platypus - Funny thing, I just read it a few weeks ago. I believe someone here suggested it but I can't recall where. Anyways, very good read. Fits nicely in the progress-is-not-all-it's-made-to-be genre.

Also from the same author, on the same topic, this video ("Paradise with Side Effects"): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8va3hi4wYHM

They bring two women from Ladakh -- community leaders -- to see how life is in London. They learn that we dump our elders in "care homes", which are nothing like homes and where care is not to be found; they visit a landfill, where they see the environmental damage created by the industrial system; and they also go to a luxury eco-clothing/furniture shop where they learn that our most luxurious and most expensive fabrics are those they have been using for centuries. In many instances, the look of horrified incredulity on their face is very telling.
