this was suggested on my YouTube Home page. I was going to mention it here but I thought it was so ridiculous I didn’t.

I kept trying to figure out where the fat guy and his wife were in the Bay Area from their backyard view. Those idiots! He’s ancient by Silicon Valley standards and he has been acting like another great job is a mouse click away on his Mac. “the self proclaimed corporate gypsy” just keeps ringing in my head. It doesn’t matter what you proclaim, wake up dude!

I mean the guy had just had multiple layoffs from 60-65. He doesn’t even wonder if the world is telling him something.

At the end I’m not sure if moving the kids in to pay groceries (seriously if grocery bills are an issue in the Bay Area you’re done) and rents good or bad.

What did I learn? There’s a bunch of idiots holding on to an extravagant lifestyle there who haven’t cut back. Somehow John Goodman’s monologue about this from the gambler echoes between my ears.

Edit - come to think of it I had two neighbors like this when I lived in Los Altos. Laid off management from National Semi and Intel. After ten years they got it and the for sale signs went up. In the meantime it was pathetic.

So do I - both issues are solvable at the ballot box. In the meantime so many blue collar jobs are going unfilled - its a big problem now and its going to be a bigger problem as the older generation of boilermakers, electricians, welders, pipefitters, and plumbers retire.

j/k. brute is fascinated by how the whole political landscape seems to be shifting these last 5 years. brute thinks he's still pretty much in the same position, but that position used to be considered liberal-libertarian, and now it is considered conservative-libertarian.

Shapiro, who considers himself very conservative:
- wants to legalize pot
- is for gay marriage
- is even relatively reasonable on abortion, saying 20 weeks isn't "really pro-choice" (btw, brute tried to find the exact date/week for abortion cut-offs in the Democratic Platform, but couldn't. their link to "Women's Rights" gave a 404, which brute found hilarious)
- is ok with trans people, just doesn't want to give up the concept of biological sexes

how the fuck is that conservative?

maybe the new generation of conservatives is over those dinosaur ideas like "god hates fags" and "marijuana is the devil's work", and brute will end up being a conservative. *shudders*

why is there a car in space?

brute doesn't care much for space, but that was a pretty cool launch. it's interesting how decades ago, space was a government thing, and now the leaders are private industry. did the government get worse? or private industry better? or did the dynamics just change?

it's also somewhat amusing that it is apparently easier for humans to send a rocket into space than to build a quality, affordable compact sized car, or construct public transportation in a major metropolitan area. the cold, empty vastness of space has nothing on NIMBY and supply-chain optimization!

Good question. Standard procedure for a test flight is to send a simple block of steel so as not to waste a very expensive satellite in case things go wrong.

The car substitutes for the steel block. Musk can probably write the car off as a business expense I read somewhere that it was his own car, but I haven't seen verification.

No, it's standard procedure. Research that's too expensive/high risk for private industry gets done first by government/via government grants---otherwise it might not get done at all. It's rather unusual for private industry to do fundamental research (Bell Labs comes to mind as an exception). Then later private industry can capitalize on it. There's no reason the government should still subsidize launches for private cell phone companies when orbital launch technology is more than half a century old. TL;DR when it comes to R&D, gov tends to do the R and industry tends to do the D.

Musk is standing on the shoulders of giants. He's drawing from 70 years of government funded rocket science R&D.

Kennedy sold the Apollo program to Congress as a jobs program, so different components were built in all 50 states. It wouldn't have been funded otherwise, but it made space way more expensive than it needs to be now.
