A blog on the origin and history of the major founding blocks of modern civilization. I've only read a few of the posts so far but I'd highly recommend it. Apparently the author just quit his job to go full time with this so there should be much more (or even higher quality) content going forward.
Iron:From Mythical to Mundane
A history of Smallpox and its' eradication
Early History of the bicycle and why it took so long for such an idea to be implemented
Roots of Progress
Re: Roots of Progress
Very cool!
One of the most fun books I read this year was "How to Invent Everything" by Ryan North. Lots of interesting stuff like how to make a computer that uses flowing water rather than electricity and notes about how all sorts of things could have been invented much earlier in human history than they were.
