Re: The postmodern era of investing
Hasn't it always done this to some extent though? Whilst this fund sounds very silly imo its perhaps in some sense not that different from... This is how I see it. There have been financial products tailored for non-(client) profit maximizing reasons for a long time. Wall Street provides what the p...

Re: EREers who invest actively, what tools do you use in your analysis?
It's easy to set up the math for whether that's worthwhile. It depends on the "you"; specifically what the value-add in alpha (if any?) is on an hourly basis compared to the value-add of trawling the roadside for glass and aluminum or pursuing your profession. Compare, Portfolio x alpha+ ...

Re: EREers who invest actively, what tools do you use in your analysis?
I have been doing active value investing for the last five and a half years. In trying to think how to respond, I’ve struggled because there are so many radically different approaches that it’s hard to generalize for what to study and what tools to use. For example, I largely agree with @jacob’s pos...

Re: Extroverts - how do you do ERE?
I am an introvert and because of that recognize this answer may somewhat miss the mark, but I've thought about this when discussing early retirement with more extroverted friends. The basic formula is basically to find local activities that require minimal financial outlay. This can take any number ...

Re: Barefoot Running
I don't do enough running to have an informed opinion on barefoot running, but I have worn Xeroshoes (a brand of zero-drop boots/shoes/sandals) for several years now and love them. I wear the sandals for almost everything, the shoes for things that are a bit more involved, and the boots when it's co...

Re: Dave's Journal - documenting the path to FI
Sounds like things are going well. What martial art are you practicing? Any books you'd recommend from your pile this year? Hey! I misspoke a bit in that it's not technically a martial art, but I've been doing Krav Maga classes. I like the idea of learning some basic self-defense and doing a new ph...

Re: Dave's Journal - documenting the path to FI
Summer 2022 Update It's been a good year so far. Some highlights: -Spent a month in Hawai'i back in February - felt good to be back! -Spent a week out in the Vegas area (really enjoyed the parks/preserves, hadn't spent a lot of time in the area before). -Successfully cut down to legitimate visible ...

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst
The main change in myself recently actually is that I'm becoming a person who is more aware of what he does and does not like that much, step 1, and step 2 is becoming cool with that. Amen to that, brother! I am in the process of trying to do this (Step 2) across a couple areas of my life, too. See...

Re: Single pair of shoes
If I really had to pick just one, I'd go with some sort of trailrunner. In reality, I wear these 1/2 - 2/3 of the time year-round: https://xeroshoes.com/shop/genesis/genesis-men/ Price tag is steep for what they are, but I bought my first pair on sale and they have a nice warranty where you can rebu...

Hey guitarplayer, I started typing my response before I saw your last post before mine , so didn't mean to dive into something you weren't intending. I'm not sure the analogy between the two industries works for health reasons, but it might for the other reasons. There are some large meat public com...

Re: New smoking
While I used to think like the OP, I no longer do. The comparison between meat and cigarettes is not apt. A fairly short response to a really big subject: 1) There is evidence that humans have been evolving towards meat consumption for something like 1-2M years to the point where some argue meat con...

Re: Bodyweight exercises
How's the training going chenda? Any issues/concerns? I came across a new calisthenics fitness platform I thought might be of some value to you. Admittedly, it might be a bit redundant with some of what we've already talked about in this thread, but sometimes people resonate with different messages....

Thanks for the update EK.
I can relate to some of your post, sometimes we have these sorts of stretches. But, like you, I'm really enjoying the spring

Re: Lemur Journal!
I appreciate hearing about the family dynamics and how you handle them. My wife and I are living with our parents (alternating every ~4-6 weeks) and it's definitely an adjustment from the standard nuclear family / couple living alone situation. For those of us who didn't grew up in such environments...

@Slevin Can definitely relate to that view and evolution! Haha, yes they are! I have come to think that even many things that I was chasing internally (not just the externals) are kind of missing the point. As you say, there is a lot to be found in just sitting and being. The insights are liberating...

Re: Slevin's journal
I've really been enjoying your journal Slevin, especially the sharing of the meditation experiences. I've experienced a milder version of what you've described, and it's really quite wonderful. Scott2's explanation of duality vs non-duality is better (more compatible with my kind of thinking) than w...
