Re: ERE Marching Meetup Series

Given that @jacob is familiar with the trails there and recommends it, let's park on Forest View and start there.

@brainstorm - Do you plan on meeting us there, or would you like a pickup near ERE HQ/nearby public transit? Forest View Drive doesn't look that long, but we could get a little more ...

Re: ERE Marching Meetup Series

Those details all work for me!

Given start time, I lean towards a 7-15 mile walk.

Happy to provide shuttle services from ERE HQ / Pink Line stop near ERE HQ (or if there is another nearby stop on the way to the meeting point).

@jacob, @scott 2, others?

Re: ERE Marching Meetup Series

Either (Salt Creek trail/Riverside dwelling tour) works for me. Any preference from you two on location?

We're still a bit out weather-wise, but preferably would shoot for the 11th and fallback to 12th if need be.

Re: ERE Marching Meetup Series

@OutOfTheBlue and I had a great Marching Meetup in Bangkok. We started at the Nana BTS stop and walked down soi 10 to the spectacular, newly expanded Benjakitti Forest Park , then down the Green Mile to Lumpini Park and back. My garmin watch clocked us at 19km for the walk for about 3.5 hours. I ...

Re: Yields and Flows - Level 5 towards 6

I'm not sure if there is (/ought to be) a specific emphasis on positive versus negative effects. If anything, off the cuff, I'd say 'most people' are overfocused on benefits of actions and too blind to negative effects. It might come down to personality though: if you trend optimist, you might do ...

Re: ERE Marching Meetup Series

March #6 in the books.

A cool gray morning, we traversed the radioactive ( ;) ) lands surrounding Argonne National Laboratory via the 10 mile Waterfall Glen loop trail. We saw walkers, runners (including a lady with two babies in a stroller), bikers, and roller skiers. I only saw one other rucker ...

Re: Morning Hot Drinks?

Sounds like the OP doesn't like coffee, but I drink decaf coffee often. Pretty minimal caffeine in there.

One of my ERE HQ visitors once asked for a "cup of hot water". Wait what? You don't want anything in it. Nope, just heat it in the microwave.

Apparently, it's a common thing in China.

I ...

Re: ERE Marching Meetup Series

Coming up on 11/23. Current forecast looks to be chilly (mid 20s) and (pretty) low chance of rain, we'll stay in touch as we get closer late next week:

@Suo

Really appreciate you saying that! I've often questioned the usefulness of having these kinds of conversations...it echoes familiar with discussions on say politics or religion where almost everyone has their views basically 100% established and really have no interest in learning. So it's ...

Re: ERE Marching Meetup Series

I think the big screen TV that was mounted on a tree in front of a hammock in the middle of the front yard took the prize.

100%! Many of those outdoor setups, in dollar terms, significantly outstrip an ERE'rs entire (operating) capital assets!

It would be great if we could accommodate ...

Re: Quitting Alcohol Pros and Cons

Frita, sounds like you have a great handle on things and have found a nice balance. Maybe I should work on this whole flexibility thing, that’s somewhat foreign to me, haha. I tend to pick one way of doing things and never stop, even if that way isn’t serving me anymore.

Hah, this entire post ...

Re: Quitting Alcohol Pros and Cons

I just crossed the 2 year mark of no alcohol, uneventfully, with no new reflections on thoughts on it. Still think it would occasionally augment a situation, but overall happy with where things are at.

Like @Smashther, I toyed with the idea of having a drink here or there...but haven't done so and ...

Re: ERE Marching Meetup Series

Following up on March #6, I'm actually free a few more dates (2 of the Sundays) - 11/16, 11/17, 11/23, 11/24, and 11/30 if that ends up helping.

Shall we tentatively plan on 11/16 and play it by ear with the weather? IE, if that doesn't work because of weather, kick it back the next day/weekend ...

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst

The idea that I'm just actually in certain measurable ways quite different than the majority of the population, and not just in a "every snowflake is different isn't that beautiful" kind of way, was immensely relieving. It was, in a way, permission to stop the relentless, lifelong effort of ...

Re: Value Investing

You make a subtle but very good point about the treatment of the final cash flow and its implications!

I’ve always found it a bit ironic when I read investment write-ups espousing the virtues of thinking like an owner and then yeah, after modeling out cash flows for 5-10 years they then slap a big ...

Re: Value Investing

Ah yes, understood, agreed!

I want to expand a bit on your final sentence because the nuance is important. We still need to distinguish between two kinds of value investing (as people commonly use the phrase).

There is the value investing that many people talk about which is buying securities with ...
