Re: Western Red Cedar's Journal
Awesome photos. Here's a nature photo from the other day from our neck of the woods (Northern England): https://i.ibb.co/Z1B3k6G/IMG-20201231-145239.jpg The roots/wings thing has always been an issue for me. We moved every 2 years when I was a kid and I completely lost all of my friends every time. ...

Re: Egg's journal (or "Dude, Where's my Job")
Quick update. Second baby is here. Sleep is limited, but cool to finally meet him. He had a few health issues, but they look to be resolving. Also been offered a software developer apprenticeship position to start in late Feb, which kicks off with a 3-month bootcamp (by what seems to be a well respe...

Re: Egg's journal (or "Dude, Where's my Job")
It's quite funny really. The smallest people in our family seem to have the most stuff too, by a long way and they've never bought anything or asked for much. They seem to be stuff magnets! Yup. And it's continued. I've been throughly un-ERE of late and bought the little man all sorts of stuff

House - The home we have I believe nails value over price. ...But I would love to never get a mortgage again so I could continue to enjoy mortgage free life and be able to tell my kids I was mortgage free from 35 blah, blah, blah!! We'll see what happens. Good to read an update (you like to space the...

Re: Egg's journal (or "Dude, Where's my Job")
Cheers, ertyu. Hope yours works out well too. I suspect I'll find an internal supply pipe has just corroded over time up there. Famous last words, but shouldn't be too much of an issue to fix. Just a bit frustrating that I have to wait all week to finish work before I can head back to the house and ...

@Egg Also, I think we must hang out in the same youtube circles, as I've watched a couple of "The Irish Partizans" videos  . I am guessing you will also be familiar with the Bald & Bankrupt channel too? Heh, yes for sure. Now you mention Bald and Bankrupt, you've reminded me of a...

Re: Egg's journal (or "Dude, Where's my Job")
UK new lockdown just been announced. Feeling a bit of cabin fever as a result. Next week is my last week of employment, although I'm really hoping COVID doesn't close van hire places, as I already have a hire van booked to move house in a couple of weeks and if we can't move, remaining on the hook f...

Re: 3 yrs to FI: ertyu's journal
So, it appears I have put in an offer on a 1 bedroom flat. €40k. Congrats on the flat, ertyu. +1 on treasures being a bonus. There's just something fascinating about (near) living history. I have been helping my family clear my recently-deceased grandad's house and the old photos and newspapers are...

Re: Egg's journal (or "Dude, Where's my Job")
Unfortunately my last living grandparent died a couple of weeks ago. On the good side, he died peacefully and at a decent age. We were able to go to his funeral, which was also a nice opportunity to see the family (despite undesirable circumstances). It was also the first time I've seen a corpse. Fe...

Re: Egg's journal (or "Dude, Where's my Job")
My 2 year career break has been approved. Casual work tolerated but I'd have to resign if I got any other permanent job. Feels like a win to me. Most of the paid things I wanted to try out are quite casual in nature anyway (I didn't get accepted for the software apprenticeship incidentally), and par...

Re: Lemur Journal!
Might be off topic or too abstract, but thinking that 'fixing stupid' is a worthwhile exercise only really makes sense if you think being wrong - in the sense of incorrectly perceiving an objective truth - is a bad thing. I'm not so sure that's the case. Truth is overrated imho.

Re: Egg's journal (or "Dude, Where's my Job")
General update Voluntary unemployment beckons! I did try the job for a while longer, and kept a fairly open mind about sticking at it (my boss really is great) but I'll be finishing less than a month from now. The only question that remains is whether I'll be allowed to keep the door slightly open ...

Re: Egg's journal (or "Dude, Where's my Job")
When I had a similar situation I negotiated the 5day week office based role into working from home and part time 3 days a week. I still walked away, as I really knew my heart wasn't in it- I was super burned out, and i personally had a bigger calling to spend time with my little children. Hey Fiddl...

Re: Egg's journal (or "Dude, Where's my Job")
I kinda did it, kinda not. Boss thinks it's my mental health that is at issue here rather than the job per se that is making me feel burnt out and not spend enough time with family (I agree) so he's letting me leave at the end of my notice period if I still feel the same way in a few months, but I h...

Re: Egg's journal (or "Dude, Where's my Job")
Thanks ertyu and Biscuits and Gravy. Yeah, I definitely think my wife would appreciate a hand with the babies. Just the one baby right now takes up so much of her time/energy that we were both a bit apprehensive about coping with the second - at least during the early days of both of them being so ...

Re: Egg's journal (or "Dude, Where's my Job")
both 1 and 2 sound awesome to me, looks like a win-win whichever way things shake out. As for regret, no reason to wallow in it as long as you learned something, and it looks like you did. Enjoy, whichever way things pan out! Thanks, yeah I generally agree. The only "lose" is if I either:...

Re: Egg's journal
In a classic case of "well that escalated quickly" I realised that my assertion of no point in regret wasn't really accurate. I have since discussed with my wife and agreed in principle to hand in my (3 month) notice by the end of this week. We're tied into another 9 months of relatively e...
