Re: Good day from Germany

Nothing I can think of right now. The English equivalent is SH words, and the SH is usually really sharp and quick. And I know you are not being negative or condescending, because I am a language nerd tickled by absurdities too. :) English speakers are really familiar with Schnitzel even though we d...

Re: Good day from Germany

Welcome, looking forward to your journal. I wonder how English speakers would pronounce the sch in Schnitzel? Like school? Ein Sknitzel mit Pommes, bitte! I have never heard an English speaker pronounce the SCH in Schnitzel incorrectly. Correctly pronouncing the more subtle TZ sound though, that's r...

Re: Fox's Journey: And Onto the Sunlight!

I completely agree with your assessment of CO, and it is much more red state west of the Divide, or really anywhere outside of Denver-Boulder-Fort Collins. Check out Carmax or Carvana for your hatchback. Overpriced but less hassle than dealing with a private party, although people in Utah could be m...

Re: Global Wellesley and Wellington

@Lucky C You nailed why I'm even looking at conservative, active funds. I am trying to prepare for a downturn relatively soon. This last decade in the market seems crazy and unsustainable, but who knows. I don't! The idea is the fund keeps up with the market now, roughly, and does better when it tan...

Re: Global Wellesley and Wellington

I also wonder if you could do well copying the top 10 or 20 Wellington holdings to avoid the fees (though Global Wellington is still only 0.46%). Top 10 Global Wellington stocks are >20% of its equities portion. Honestly, the 0.46% fee bugs me a little and that's very good for an active fund. Thank...

Re: Global Wellesley and Wellington

I wonder if managers/funds have "momentum" in their alpha... I think there is something to this, great point. I also think there would be a sufficient lag in both their outperforming and underperforming so you wouldn't lose all of the gains by getting in too late and missing the outperfor...

Re: Global Wellesley and Wellington

@Lucky C Your point was and is clear, but my strategy is hoping there is some hedging advantage in active vs strictly passive investing. Active funds show no difference vs passive funds when looking in the past, but I don't see how we can extrapolate to the future. Your point about a contrarian posi...

Re: Global Wellesley and Wellington

I'm not sure why anyone would think the future will be like the past. The statement is in every prospectus for a reason. I guess I see investing as hedging, and assume active investments will fare better than passive, further assuming the entire system doesn't break down where everyone is toast.

Re: Global Wellesley and Wellington

I have been watching Global Wellington for months. It mirrors Wellington but diverges based on international return, as expected. Nothing crazy going on and the performance seems quite reasonable. It appears to be completely stable for a buy in, which I am considering.

I have thought about this a lot and I don't see a broad use, only bespoke solutions. I like everything about the project, and it's nice for tinkering and solving small problems.

My path has loosely paralleled yours so far, albeit much less gregariously. I've had some plans blowup, mostly due to health, but I regret nothing. I am somewhat familiar with the part of the world you are traveling to soon, so I can answer some general questions if they arise. I hope you find what ...

INTJs are great for me to argue with and ghost ‘cause they’re no fun.
Thank you, nothing better than getting ghosted as an INTJ so we can get back to important business.

I like the way you write. You should become a writer in some capacity.

Re: Firefox, this forum and flash of unstyled content (FOUC)

I block almost everything by default with multiple browser plugins and this site/forum works flawlessly for me. Thank you Jacob for making this work so well, although this seems to be a side effect of the minimum maintenance strategy. :)

I too have a feeling there is some serious market pumping going on, but I lack the econ/finance background to really understand. Not pulling out or changing my investments, so not sure where this "feeling" is getting me, but there it is.

Re: Piracy and Illegal Downloads

Don't engage in any form, and don't really feel pirates are bad people. As an aside, I can't stand DRM so I will support non-DRM content (Humble Bundle, for example) any time I can. Not really worried about getting caught and I like to save money whenever I can, so not sure why I am a hard no.

Thanks for the warning. I follow Jacob's procedure, aside from newly created accounts where the site wants you to click here to verify email/account. After that I never click on links in email. It's sufficiently poisoned that I even have malicious stuff from hijacked friend emails.

Re: How to have more energy?

@ertyu: I'm sorry. My mental fatigue was mostly situational (too long in school, unsure if that's what I wanted to do "for the rest of my life"). It mostly resolved when the situation changed, but it does linger. I wish I could help. My opinion is that what works is what you'll do. When on...

Re: How to have more energy?

I have run the gamut with fatigue so here are my thoughts. I see three main causes of fatigue: elective/optional fatigue, mental fatigue, and morbid fatigue. Elective fatigue is by choice. The average person (relatively healthy, reasonable sleep) does not have much fatigue and when they do it is ele...

Re: The bus ticket theory of genius

I agree with Jacob. I can't imagine how generalization can create genius since obsession/specialization is a critical component of genius. It's also important to distinguish generalization from serial obsession/specialization. I can imagine how serial obsessions can create genius to a degree.
