Republishing this from last year as there was some really good advice, and US tax season is upon us.

Re: Best way to learn a language?
When I was younger, language learning was one of my main hobbies. I have learned and forgotten at least four languages. I had the greatest return on time invested with the Pimsleur method. I would not even consider starting to learn a language if it didn't have all three levels of Pimsleur available.

Re: Investments Trade Log
@jp I am also monitoring the high yield CEF space. I'd just note a couple things. If you look at histogram of these type funds, they are fat tailed. The ones I am looking are at the bottom 3% percentile of 15 year historical prices. That's pretty good until you look at the actual graph, the tail kee...

@ Jacob, thank you for the Burry video. His possible aspergers shows. He reminds me of the Sherlock Holmes character in Elementary. I think his formula for becoming a successful investor - try and understand reality by questioning and looking for answers is inspiring.

Re: How Were Your Investment Returns in 2015?
Depending upon the day I measured it, -1 to -3%. I was actually quite satisfied b/c it closely tracked the 'lazy portfolio' returns I judge myself by. I am consistently performing inline with a globally diversified asset allocation. Consistently getting market returns is better than most investors e...

Re: corner of berkshire and fairfax forum
Thank you frommi for the reply. How long have you followed cobf? I find SA interesting because people have different goals and time frames. Most posters assume everyone else who disagrees with them is an idiot - when they just have different goals and timeframes. It is a good place to figure out wha...

Re: corner of berkshire and fairfax forum
I know that I could go back and re-read lots of old posts for free. I was just hoping there might be a few people around who had been on the forum for a few years that could give me a good overview.

Re: What are your financial ER goals?
Oldpro, I appreciate your advice. I think it is prudent and wise. I am currently at 2% of total capital. The capital is invested in index funds and cash. For the past twelve months, my income from investments was approximately equal to my expenses for the year. Not much of a gap to speak of. Eventua...

Re: Without bounds Rv living doco
Thanks C40 for the links. Following the links from the amazon books to other book, it seems that Mexico and Central America are pretty well traveled by van. South America seems to be less written about. I do live in an undisclosed country in SA and I certainly do see young latino traveler types in V...

Two thumbs up here. Thank you for sharing. Now I see where many of my kindred spirits are hanging out.
Has anyone ever seen a South American version of mobile living - a blog, video, etc?

I wanted to know the same info while I was slogging it out to FI. That said, it has all been revealed many times in the forums if you go back through back posts. Jacob's description above is also amazingly accurate. It certainly nailed a description of me.

Re: Investments Trade Log
High yield cefs are starting to get interesting. The Third Avenue closure and Carl Ichan 'not wanting to throw fuel' on the fire as he throws fuel on the fire may add to the negative momentum (He is really entertaining). Oaktree has also said it ready to start catching 'falling knives' and that “We’...

Re: Reducing stock investing risk
IIRC about 10% percent of retail investors regularly beat the market (various broker surveys). They do spend time regularly in order to do so and they have probably spent a lot of time before getting to that stage. At least one research paper on the subject can be found here: Trading is Hazardous t...

Almostthere, surely you could extend the 4 levels yourself for anything YOU are good at. The 4 levels of wine buying, the 4 levels real estate investing, the 4 levels of ............... whatever you are good at. @Oldpro, Agreed. I asked the question in hopes of continuing the conversation. I love m...

Re: Reducing stock investing risk
For example, I'm aware of four levels of poker playing (based on working and talking with quite a few poker players and traders in my ex-career). Level 1 (I'm a level 1 poker player ... the game never interested me) is playing in a vacuum---one knows only which hands are worth more and thinks every...

Re: Early Retired: The First Month
The best I remember it, my first month FI was spent logging as much time as possible on Khan Academy algebra modules. What was really going on was that I was in dopamine withdrawal from the quick successes and accomplishments of office work. Watching the points mount up on Khan Academy was my way of...

Re: Leisure vs. Free Time
@7W5 I am glad to see the child raising time declines over time. Also I like your style of goal setting, I dropped goal setting a while ago setting up daily habits instead in intellectual areas I wanted to deepen. I think I like your goals because they might force more variety in life. My FI life co...
