Re: On deleting journals, posts, and accounts

I'm a little shocked that now iDave is deleting all of his content instead of just editing it. This isn't just directed at iDave ... but it seems a little obnoxious when people who've maintained journals and gotten a LOT of support and constructive criticism from forumites in working towards their ...

Re: On deleting journals, posts, and accounts

if something is going to harm anyone's life then i'd rather deal with the inconvenience of missing posts that see them suffer disgrace or destruction. +1 Humans aren't very good at being not human when they communicate. In nature nearly all communication is short-range and ephemeral. The range and ...

Re: Gamestop?

@ID - the problem in your thinking is that you think there is control in an investment. You seem to think that when an investor gives money to a hedge fund, that investor is directing the hedge fund to act a certain way ... I don't think there's a problem in my thinking. I don't think what you seem...

Re: Gamestop?

@ID - yeah, think of it this way: if you and a million people own shares of IBM stock, no one thinks that "a million people decided to get together and fund the such-and-such product launch" ... You're losing me. We obviously are having communication problems with this. Try it this way. I...

Re: Gamestop?

If you look at the SEC budget history (https://www.sec.gov/foia/docs/budgetact.htm), the subpar budget seems to have been a bipartisan effort despite the increases in budget under both parties. Sorry to be technical at you Dave, but that isn't considered collective action under the law.
Okay, technical is fine, that's sort of what I was after. I didn't realize you were addressing the question as a lawyer in this domain.

Re: Gamestop?

My point re: hedge fund structure is that hedge fund investors are not "doing" anything. What they are doing is turning over their money to be managed collectively as a larger, more influential pool of assets, which is then put to use doing things that aren't universally perceived as cric...

Re: Gamestop?

@ID - hedge funds are not "pools of investors acting in unison". A hedge fund is structured as a limited partnership. Each investor (pension funds, endowments, sovereign wealth, insurance companies, HNW individuals) is a limited partner in that hedge fund/limited partnership. The controll...

Re: Gamestop?

Not being a legal eagle, what's fundamentally different about the reddit group and talking heads that get on cnbc and say buy or sell, or the hedge funds themselves that are pools of investors acting in unison?

Re: 39 & Looking to retire this year. Advice appreciated

You have to consider "surprise" billing. As an example consider that you are unconscious and in need of treatment. A doctor is found and treatment is done. Unfortunately, for you the doctor/treatment is Out-of-Network; therefore, the insurance company will pay only what is considered &quo...

Re: 39 & Looking to retire this year. Advice appreciated

Ps. My biggest worry (i think) is: - a big recession/ depression where 50-70% of my portfolio is wiped out. While I'm still withdrawing....and I'm too old/rusty to get back to the work force. At the risk of sounding glib, join the club. I'm 17 years older than you and will be punching out in the ne...

Re: Gamestop?

Can't speak to the veracity, but I've heard it asserted that RH makes a lot of money selling the trading data of it's users to the hedge funds for them to exploit. They are selling it to Wall St players connected to hedgies at least (https://www.inc.com/jason-aten/robinhood-is-facebook-of-investing-...

Re: 39 & Looking to retire this year. Advice appreciated

I just looked it up and you can get $80,000 per year tax-free from long-term capital gains (and they are not taxed as income). That's true if you have no other taxable income. And I'm feeling pretty foolish. I try to keep reasonably up-to-date on tax laws but I thought capital gain exemptions were ...

Re: An ERE dating site

Yup! Which is why my problem is even more complicated than it appears. I am closed minded and judgemental. But no matter how hard I tried to change that, I couldn't, for as long as I can remember and have been looking for a mate (the last 20 years, more than half my life). I've got some hard limits...
