I havent got anything against op shops and in fact love them. But only for things I need. Not for collecting lots of unnecessary things for the sake of it.
What are OP shops?

Re: Reducing my already low expenses by 20% and nearing 1 Jacob

@matt3121 What I find so interesting from your scenerio above is how you incorporate cash flow into the picture. You've done the same in your situation. Low rate real estate leverage is certainly one of the best ways to garner some cashflow. I'd probably be hesitant to completely count on it over a...

Re: Worried about being promoted...thoughts?

Another consideration: if the economy is going down the drain, you may be best off not rocking the boat for as long as possible. The top thing to do in a recession is not to lose your job. But then, I have been established as too much of a salaryman, so... This to me is the number 1 thing. No job i...

Re: What is your ERE housing score?

I'm negative something I guess. I hit ERE, my house is paid and the rent I charge on 1 room is bigger than my total housing costs.

Re: What are other people's reactions to your living frugally?

Interesting responses here. I can say I don't mind any negativity that I get, certainly none of it is very bad. I just feel like I'm talking to people who don't understand the situation well. I'm not a terribly private person, I like to explain the things I've learned and if they are willing to list...

Re: Reducing my already low expenses by 20% and nearing 1 Jacob

#2 is interesting because I have seen people grow up in poverty who go both ways. A good friend of mine is still "running" from it, and wants his outward appearance to never reflect "poor". In your case it seems to have given you a good sense for hard work, agency, and skill/con...

Re: Reducing my already low expenses by 20% and nearing 1 Jacob

Just FYI, Patrick McKenzie wrote some stuff about SaaS pricing. It might be an interesting read for you! Yeah this seems like fairly standard advice on SAAS pricing. I think it's a bit different because in this example they are primarily interested in making money, where as in my case I'm more inte...

What are other people's reactions to your living frugally?

I've mentioned this in some of my other posts (one being today), but I've had so many reactions people where they think I'm crazy for having retired early, and downsized and cut my expenses so much.To me it's a game now, I love seeing where I can shave off some costs, it's one of my favorite hobbies...

Re: Reducing my already low expenses by 20% and nearing 1 Jacob

You're basically the poster child of a high earner on a consumerist path changing overnight and being able to take up ERE. It's pretty frigg'en impressive and admirable. I'd take slight issue with this only because I wasn't much of a consumer, I rarely bought myself things, I was just blowing way m...

Re: Question about bonds

Okay so then I assume that means it's prorated. I'll check out those links thanks. Edit: After reading it, yes it makes sense. You compensate the bondholder for the money interest they would have accrued. So if they are 3 months in you'd pay them 3 months worth, then you get the full payment when th...

Question about bonds

So, I had a quick question about Bonds, mostly I've been a stock market investor but I'd like to park some cash in bonds as well. I know many bonds pay out semi annually, so every 6 months. But how does that work exactly. Let's say I bought some corporate bonds yielding 5%. How long would I have to ...

It's funny how we (ERE HQ) already do all these things w/o even realizing that it's a thing.
Haha, well you are basically the Godfather/Yoda of ERE/Leanfire, so I just assumed in was some sort of once in a generation gift

Re: Reducing my already low expenses by 20% and nearing 1 Jacob

How did you solve the health insurance / health care problem? Subsidized ACA plan? How did you ensure acceptable neighbors with the sub-100k home? I have a somewhat subsidized ACA plan. I could have actually gotten it for free, but I chose to pay 115/mo. Even if I was paying the full $275 though I ...

Re: Reducing my already low expenses by 20% and nearing 1 Jacob

The main advantage is that you get stuff built exactly as you want it, e.g. if you need your desk to be 38" wide and 29" tall, you make it 38" wide and 29" tall. No need to suffer from a wrong height or spend extra for an adjustable one when you can build everything to spec. Yea...

Re: Reducing my already low expenses by 20% and nearing 1 Jacob

Thanks Matt 3121, I enjoyed reading that. I know we are meant to change our mindset and not rely on lists of tips, coupon cutting, etc. But sometimes it's nice to read something practical. You've really made me think about electricity usage - ours is way too high but I've never got(ten) round to fi...

Reducing my already low expenses by 20% and nearing 1 Jacob

So I achieved ERE/Leanfire about 10 months ago if I recall. I did this by drastically slashing my expenditures from 5500 a month, to about ~1,200 (I thought it would be about $1,000 but things always come up). Now these are my raw and total expenses. Over the last 9 months I've found even more ways ...

Re: How to retire in 6 years as a Barista

I think we're seeing right now how fragile it is to be an unskilled laborer. In general I recommend being a skilled laborer. I don't think anyone even very skilled laborers are immune. I know a lot of software developers that have lost their job and aren't finding anyone hiring. Ultimately I think ...

Re: How to retire in 6 years as a Barista

Nice in theory, but highly unlikely our frugal barista will qualify for this mortgage with 3% down. Another instance of why the poor stay poor. I was in a similar situation when I was young and the only way we could get financing was land contract with 10% down and that was in the easy credit era. ...
