Re: Reddit Advice on Coping with Salaryman Work
Sorry for the basic advice, but maybe in some cases the solution is just to change jobs? Many times jobs can be miserable because of contextual things: a terrible boss, a bad company culture, your desk neighbor has a conflicted relationship with soap, etc All those are fixed by a change of scenery. ...

Re: Consumer Staples just got a moat
Mass retailers are among the companies with the lowest bottom line. Consumers have it amazing, food has never been this good for this cheap in the history of mankind. They are (mostly) price takers. I think it is not unreasonable to think that their long term profits (as an aggregate) will rise alon...

Re: Will Gas Stations Exist In 15 Years?
That's getting a bit tiring now. It is a great way to separate wishful thinking from real conviction. I am a staunch proponent of emissions reduction because I generally hate waste, but believe most policies enacted today are either unrealistic or straight up counterproductive. If feels at times th...

Re: Will Gas Stations Exist In 15 Years?
@chenda The premise of the article seems absurd: But in 2025, no one wants the oil. I am willing to take the bet that in 2025 global oil consumption will be above 2020 levels. Max bet $5k To add: very interesting that with costs being so low VS ICE Bangladesh India Indonesia etc don’t see EVs taking...

Re: Will Gas Stations Exist In 15 Years?
Off topic: Money at stake will filter some poor people from prediction markets. Look at how that worked for plural voting in the past. That's not to say there aren't lots of idiotic big mouth pea brains around with oozes of time to spend. I just like to speculate about more effective ways of avoidi...

Re: Will Gas Stations Exist In 15 Years?
Why don’t we put our money where our mouth is? The thread was started august 2021 Anybody willing to make a long term bet? My money is with gas stations being alive and well in 2036. I think there are sites like long bets that will allow us to stay true to our commitments. Tangent: it is incredible ...

Re: The thing i miss the most with the new lifestyle: eating out with friends!
1) What am I doing wrong? 2) What are alternative activities that could replace/fit this one, still being frugal? 3) How to estimate which damage does this activity to our FI? 1/ You are doing it wrong. If that's the best way to connect with friends why stop doing it completely? 2/ Maybe just skip ...

Re: Which EU country requires the shortest working period before being eligible for old age pension?
Historically Germany has been great at committing suicide and coming back from the ashes. Their recent anti-science push for green energy at all costs (that resulted in record burning of coal and the razing of small towns to dig for lignite coal) was their latest suicide But I would still bet on Ger...

Re: Which EU country requires the shortest working period before being eligible for old age pension?
I would only be able to collect US SS if I lived in either DK or US. Would you have seen any problem in being "officially" DK resident and then actually living elsewhere? As long as you have an address where you can receive paperwork, plus maybe a functioning cell phone number, nobody is ...

Re: Which EU country requires the shortest working period before being eligible for old age pension?
In France you have a thing called RMI, which is again free money. https://www.rmi-fr.com/ I disagree with Jean, unfortunately I think using these will not lead to their disappearance but just an increase of taxes in the poor people who actually work for a living. at least thats what has consistently...

Re: Which EU country requires the shortest working period before being eligible for old age pension?
Your assumption is incorrect. You just need to live in Italy for 10 years legally. Also, if you make zero or similar in Italy you can ask for the “social chèque” which is basically a $500 per month free money. For that you just need to be legally resident in Italy and not be abroad for more than 29 ...

Re: Which EU country requires the shortest working period before being eligible for old age pension?
In Italy, and I suspect in many Western European countries, you become eligible for a minimal pension when you reach a certain age, regardless of working years. In Italy this was setup because (especially in the south) many people worked all their life in informal jobs and would otherwise be left wi...

Re: ERE Fest 2023: Ft Dirtbag
This is what I need, anything over it is a luxury, so I think we'll be ok :) I used to be fiercer but I am now old and fat and make too much money which has made me weak For the cooking, depending on the utensils and the size of the pots I can cook for 20 people no problem with a 4 burner gas stove....

Re: ERE Fest 2023: Ft Dirtbag
Fantastic idea!
Questions:
1/ is there running water so that one can wash himself? doesn't need to be a full fledged shower - but with the hot weather I need to be able to stay clean.
2/ what is the cooking equipment like? gas stove? or should we do open fire? In any case I'd volunteer to cook

Re: Late 20's: It's time to make a choice! Help with Real Estate and well-being
Agree with WFJ: consider the value of flexibility and not locking yourself to a location at such a young age. At 42, I make 6x what I was making at 27. Would not have gotten here without the flexibility of moving across countries freely. Also would add: $200k property generating 6k/y means 3%. You g...

Re: Would 20M Radically Increase Your Happiness?
Interesting that you say stealth, because the more we spend, the higher the attention it draws, particularly during an economic downturn. So it becomes hard to hide. By good, it sounds like you'd donate most of it to save puppies and orphans, this could be a beautiful thing that would bring happine...
