Bread and circuses. I'll be deliberately avoiding participating in this.

ETA: That is as a player/consumer.

Re: Trump - Clown Genius

What are people's thoughts here with regards to the electoral college vote tomorrow? I read the post by John Robb mentioned in ShriekingFeralHatred's journal. He takes an extreme stance and seems biased as his blog focuses on disruption and societal collapse, but it doesn't seem that far fetched in ...

Are you really that blind? I'm talking about your responses. It's been the same thing now for 2 BIG threads on this topic. Nobody has the facts except you and your chosen experts. It must be nice being so enlightened compared to us mortals. Around in circles and circles and circles. I'm counting dow...

Re: the animal's journal

I don't think many know it in complete detail, but they have a simple realization that there is good traction. I'm very curious about all things Alaska. It's helped me out quite a bit working as a tour guide in the area. From what I've found, this seems to be a good strategy to follow for any job. I...

Re: Unexpected expenses every year

Well, I read this article today that was relevant: http://www.wsj.com/articles/the-children-of-the-opioid-crisis-1481816178 If any of you have read Hillbilly Elegy, it's the same story. Many grandparents and other family members are finding themselves taking care of children after they leave destruc...

Re: the animal's journal

@Half moon- I should have clarified. All roads (there aren't many) are plowed by the state. Everything is usually cleared within 24 hrs following a significant snowfall. Some areas the snow is compacted down, but that doesn't pose a problem as long as it stays cold. Chains can be helpful in the tran...

Re: the animal's journal

It's 2WD. It doesn't snow much where I'm at. The coastal regions and southern AK receive lots of snow. Most of Alaska receives relatively little. Our average is about 2.5-3 ft. Most of the winter, there is no fresh snowfall because the temperatures are too cold. I've driven a few thousand miles for ...

Along the lines of impressive old timers...Dick Griffith. I think I may have mentioned him before here somewhere. He skiied across the Arctic and the Northwest passage, from Alaska's western coast to Hudson Bay. Most of his trips occurring after the age of 65. A few years ago he completed the same w...

@Seppia- Wow, thank you! How kind. I appreciate you reading. A book would be an interesting project and something that I'd be interested in but I haven't been able to come up with anything that'd be worth writing about yet. Maybe I'm thinking too hard. We'll see what happens. @Half Moon- Yes, the ca...

The Age of Stupid A European documentary on climate change and resource depletion. It's a different perspective than most documentaries, based in a devastated future world (2055) and looking back at events happening today and the past that led to the problem. If you've read a lot on these topics, t...
