Re: Homebrew ROi

I recently just got into this. I'm trying to make some mead and so far have spent $50 on starter equipment and $50 on honey. From my research, it seems like equipment runs the gamut of "empty apple juice container and bread yeast" to super fancy professional stuff. My mead isn't anywhere ...

Re: Ex-lawyer

Climate is very much an issue of personal preference. Not everyone wants to live in 40 degree summers prone to bushfires and droughts, even those of us who grew up watching Neighbours. But congratulations on the citizenship. Absolutely it’s a personal preference. And variety is the spice of life. B...

Homebrew ROi

Bought a ridiculous massive homebrew system that will send me straight to ERE hell. Brewing 100L batches and filling two 50L kegs. Also bought a canning machine. I have 5 beers on tap. It’s great craic altogether. Had my first local homebrew club gathering Friday night. 10 new friends on the drink a...

Re: Ex-lawyer

It’s been four and a half years since I last updated this journal. I’m not sure what I said previously, but we were short of cash in our stone cottage in rural Ireland due to a failure to find remote work or develop passive income streams. I decided to seek work in Dublin, which was difficult, but I...

Re: Should I sign a two year contract with my current employer?

Sounds weird to me. Too long term. It's not like it's a 600k a year deal. Say no thanks unless it's 110.

"Does Sydney man’s plan to retire at 35 make sense?"

"A SYDNEY man says he’s not going to buy a house so he can put all his money into the stockmarket and live a life of leisure by 35. So is the plan as crazy as it sounds?" http://www.news.com.au/finance/money/investing/does-sydney-mans-plan-to-retire-at-35-make-sense/news-story/ab5f24c3abfc...

Re: Travelhack-List

In this country if people talk of a holiday in Europe, they do not mean the south of Cork. There are many sites that connect wanderers with house (really pet) sitting opportunities. You build up a reputation over time and get better gigs the more attractive you are. We have enjoyed all of our experi...

Re: The meandering musings of Mister Freedom

My sister has "year of"'s. Year of this, year of that. This year it is 10000 km of adventure. Or something like that. She was meant to do a year of simplicity, but to be honest her idea of it is different to mine. (eg the bought her 7 year old kid an expensive fitbit - he ate it).

Re: Expensive dinners and drinks with friends

Sometimes you have to spend money to make money.

Also, during the accumulation phase, sometimes this involves a certain lifestyle, and indeed, this can be a perk. Dropping this side of things post R comes naturally.

@Did - Damn. That certainly doesn't sound good for the faint-of-hearted! What do you love about it? Is it a cost-effective option for Irish housing? Also, are you having to renovate it totally for heating, electricity, etc? I am curious. That's a unique housing setup. Do not think I am some master ...

Re: McMansion Hell

I wouldn't recommend an old stone cottage. Well, we love it. But old stone things in a place like Ireland are prone to smelling like old stone things. Like a castle ruin. Damp and the like. And there is dust, and if you are unlucky, mold. I'm not sure where the dust comes from. The roof maybe. Perha...

Re: Thoughts about respectability

On signalling. I've been out of the corporate sector for over 4 years. I'm trying to dabble back for a little while, but people interviewing are confused and suspicious (even though I'm fudging the 4 years somewhat). I think they smell the freedom and disdain on me.

Re: McMansion Hell

We are still living in our small, 100 year old plus stone cottage in rural Ireland. Our bedroom is so narrow only one of us can shuffle down the side of our bed comfortably. But the strange thing is, when back in my parent's normal sort of suburban house in Australia earlier in the year, I got a bit...
