Re: Montreal Meetup - September 15

Sure, I am actually shopping for flights these days. I need to pick between Air Canada all the way to Montreal with no checked luggage or flying with the local airline (very generous luggage allowance) to Ottawa and then get a car ride the same day to Montreal. Both options are the same price. I am ...

Re: Zipper specialists

My 2 cents of advice: Is it really the whole zipper system the problem or only the zipper slider ? I am asking because last year I had zipper failure on my winter coat, rain coat and an older camping/yard work jacket. I brought one of them to a local seamstress asking her to replace the zipper. She ...

Re: Resign on a small sum

Hello, I might fall into this category. I resigned 13 months ago from full-time corporate office work with about 16x savings. I had a paid house at that time (and still do) and I figured I needed about $15,000/year to keep the same lifestyle that I had while working full-time. I knew I could earn th...

Re: ERE map

Alright, good to know I am not the only one up north after all. theanimal : I paddled part of the Alatna and Koyukuk river for a month last summer. Was very interesting to compare the people/infrastructure/First Nation interaction with what I see here. Rossox : Bienvenue ! I have been to your corner...

OMG... le vidéo est trop drôle, but also quite gore at the end. And flirting doesn't count as networking, unless you later deepened the relationship.

Re: Montreal Meetup - September 15

Hi Demosthenese, in deed not much members in Montreal, don't even count the ones hibernating... I don't live in Montreal myself but I often visit and is probably the only big city where I have any potential to connect with like minded people about ERE. I will be there again this summer. Maybe we cou...

Re: Montreal Meetup - September 15

-15 C is a reasonable threshold . I would not like to be out in that humid, bone shaking cold. It is much more dry in Siberia. My threshold is around -30C, which would probably feel like a -15 in Mtl. It is all about perspective. A friend of mine here lives in a 5th wheel year round, he has a woodst...

Re: Getting food from $200/mo to $100/mo? Adventures in making your own food!

Since entering my semi-retirement (going from full time work to 5-10hours/week last year) I was able to steadily decrease my food cost, about 10-15$ /month decrease. One thing I found out is that I buy more real food. I.e : no more oreo cookies, making banana bread from scratch instead. No meat, alm...

Re: Eliminating Facebook from our lives?

I used to have an account when I re-located 6000km from home, to keep in touch with friends and family but after a few years it was more depressing than anything. People where posting stuff for bragging sake and I realized that keeping in touch with people through Facebook was not worth it and a lon...

Re: Expensive dinners and drinks with friends

As long as it doesn't happen every week, I guess. If you have fun but think that it is a waist of money don't do it too often. If you end up with new meaningful friendship or get some unexpected opportunities, why not. Eat salad instead of steak. Drink cranberry juice, not a bloody mary. And ask for...

Re: Using ERE for other purposes ?

On the other hand, when working less hours per week the tax rate is lower (at least in my country this makes a big difference). Second this point. Not to mention other opportunities which open up in a society that bases ideas of wealth mainly on earned income. but an outside observer will just see ...

Re: Using ERE for other purposes ?

So I see there are people out there working part-time and still pursuing FI. It is still something I consider doing and I am already walking on that path financially speaking, I have a paid house, no debt and live simply. But I enjoy the transition between the full-time grind like OTCW mentionned an...

Using ERE for other purposes ?

Hello all, I am new on the forum, I have been lurking on the forum for quite a bit, maybe for the last 2 years or more ? I discovered ERE when I was looking at options to stop working or at least reduce greatly the amount of time I spent working. I entered the canadian job market in my early twentie...
