Re: COVID-19

@nomadscientist It's a bit passe now, but it has also been fashionable to compare the United States with the so-called Scandinavian Miracle. Since we are in the Great Awokening, it makes sense that the new paragons are East Asian. In both cases, the answer is the same. Culture is a path function. Ev...

Re: COVID-19

Anyone notice major backlogs in getting work done? Since I have graduated and am starting a new job requiring interstate travel, I have spent a lot of time talking with paper pushers in various contexts (various departments at my university, current landlord's office, freight company, future landlor...

Re: COVID-19: Unwinding the Lockdown and Long Term Epidemic

I believe it is a combination of executive orders and a Trump appointee over the USCIS having their thumb on the scales in favor of rejecting H1Bs. It's certainly the case that those things can be changed, but the damage (or progress, if you are so inclined) has already been done. For instance, ther...

Re: COVID-19: Unwinding the Lockdown and Long Term Epidemic

I wouldn't say Trump is the most powerful president ever, but he did get two supreme court nominations (a handful of presidents got zero, more got only one) and has been around for what at the very least seems to be an inflection point in American politics. I would say that safely prevents him from ...

Re: COVID-19: Unwinding the Lockdown and Long Term Epidemic

To be less snarky, the reason for my so-called projection is conservatives frequently come up with this silly standard that stories they don't like need to be discussed exclusively in terms of personal responsibility. It's patently silly. Government policy does have some application. If you don't th...

And to take charge of your life accordingly. They have. They are rioting. When your property is being destroyed, I'm sure you won't have any inclination to call the police or expect they show up and do anything about it. Carpe diem. Problems we care about suddenly become other people's or the syste...

Re: COVID-19: Unwinding the Lockdown and Long Term Epidemic

I see the goals of BLM as palliative care. Black poverty and criminality is a facet of the kleptocratic neoliberal system which creates a discontinuity between the precariat and the upper middle class. The African American community started with less, so when social mobility started to crumble, they...

Re: COVID-19: Unwinding the Lockdown and Long Term Epidemic

I'm guessing at least half the people here were born sometime before the last known white-on-black lynching (1981). The civil rights act (1964) is also probably younger than a few people here. Moreover, socialized attitudes are pretty sticky and can last many generations. So it's a little early to m...

Re: COVID-19: Unwinding the Lockdown and Long Term Epidemic

@ffj I think you might be over-playing it a bit. The loudest shouting seems to be about getting the police to kill fewer black people, which is a fairly modest and reasonable proposal. I guess the black contribution to that endeavor would be to appear scrupulously upright to a standard no white has ...

Re: COVID-19: Unwinding the Lockdown and Long Term Epidemic

From birth to the end of undergrad, I spent my life in CA, mostly centered in the central valley. About half the people I hung out with spoke Spanish as a first, or at least co-first, language. Then I get to grad school and the only Hispanics around are the dudes renovating houses in my neighborhood...

Re: COVID-19: Unwinding the Lockdown and Long Term Epidemic

I'm pretty confident we are probably talking about the same kind of conservatives after reading your post. The more sophisticated argument is to break down the issue in to one-off incidents that can be judged piecemeal and thus resolved without any fundamental scrutiny of the system itself. If the i...

Re: Psychological challenge of sticking with a volatile portfolio

I'm probably the laziest and most incompetent investor around here, but I have two pots of money, one of which gets allocated to positions which seem reasonably valued (using non-existent ZAF logic) and another which gets allocated to the even stupider ideas like chasing after momentum and what redd...

Re: COVID-19: Unwinding the Lockdown and Long Term Epidemic

I haven't polled my ocean of conservative people recently, except for seeing a few Blue Lives Matter posts on facebook, but historically they have generally taken an unnuanced pro-police attitude. I wouldn't be surprised if this attitude were changing, but if it is, it is a pretty recent phenomenon....

Re: COVID-19: Unwinding the Lockdown and Long Term Epidemic

Unquestioning support (or at least inclination towards giving the benefit of the doubt) for police is a good example of the arbitrary bundling of political positions. Support for large, unionized government organizations with little accountability or performance standards for their employees does no...

MLK Jr is about one Slate article away from getting the #MeToo treatment. Since the Great Man theory of history has been discredited, I'm sure everyone will get behind scrubbing him from the record as well. So many streets to be renamed.

Re: Danger of Credit Crunch?

I was researching credit cards a month or two ago and a bunch of people on reddit were complaining that their limits were getting unceremoniously reduced. Standards are apparently also getting tightened up for applying. Though, that is only at the consumer level and probably irrelevant to anyone her...

Re: COVID-19: Unwinding the Lockdown and Long Term Epidemic

Through some quick and dirty googling, California alone produces about a quarter of the US's agricultural output, by dollar value anyway. Food production might not be so lopsided as people suppose. See: central valley, which is nothing like what most people expect to see in CA.
