Re: Finance Tracking options

@figmenter I've wanted to try ledger. Do you just have one text file with all your transactions? Or can you do it year by year? Or is it totally up to you how many files you have (I worry about the text files getting unwieldy)? Would you use this for more complicated accounting (like a business)?

@suomalainen That sounds bad. I've never lived somewhere with smog. I think that would be a deal breaker for me.

Re: C40's Journal

I was surprised to learn about the smog problem in SLC. Something to think about. Maybe everyone knows about it here already but I just didn't put smog + Utah on the same page. Is it a real problem or overblown?

Re: Motorcycle for cheap transportation?

@Seppia Good point -- I forgot about the Vstrom. Last time I was looking at this, it was brand new so couldn't get an inexpensive used one. But now there are multitudes (just checked my local Craigslist). It seems like a strong contender with more modern design than the KLR (and likely it is way ...

Re: Motorcycle for cheap transportation?

So I think using a scooter is probably out of the question for using one bike to do all those(?)

I think you're right. There are scooters that do on road and highway (see Honda Silverwing and similar) and some that do off road and town (Honda Rukus, etc). But I don't think there is one that ...

Progress: ~40.9% ($491,500/1,200,000)
Weight: 215 pounds
Goal weight: 192 (23 pounds to go)
Side business goal: 2 out of 50 schools (couple potential, one almost closed but pushed a year)

I had false readings on my weight -- my scale tends to read low when the battery gets low but it doesn't tell ...

Re: Motorcycle for cheap transportation?

The other part of the experience is just being... out there. Like hanging off a piece of hardware but there is nothing between you and the world. Maybe a small windshield taking air off your chest. But you can reach your hand out and right over there -- you can touch the car driving down the road ...

Re: Finance Tracking options

I've tried Yodlee -- they went not so great. Now I'm using Mint which is okay -- the numbers are there but they barely add any value beyond summing it up. Their apps are divergent (Android is fine, on iPad I can't even find the net worth). They have some other widgets that are not very useful at all ...

Re: Motorcycle for cheap transportation?

But on a bicycle, you're in a subjective lane that is frequently used by other vehicles and pedestrians. In Chicago, I got doored by people opening their Uber vehicle's door right into the bicycle lane. One moment I was up and slowly coming up to a light, next moment I was on the ground with a ...

Re: Motorcycle for cheap transportation?

@enigmaT120 Yes however after riding both for long enough, I know which I would prefer to be in. The problem with statistics is that they are generalized. Motorcycling tends to attract a wide variety of people and quite a few are far out on the pier of risk taking and/or young with poor judgement ...

Re: Motorcycle for cheap transportation?

That is wild. I was guessing they didn't lean as much but it looks like when you lean, the tire deforms and it works. Looking at videos on youtube like this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PZ_d5IIdRZI

At MSF, I learned to lean way more but I noticed in riding, that I tended to get a little ...

Re: Motorcycle for cheap transportation?

I second the MSF course. It's really fun too. I'd kind of like to go do it again. In terms of what to buy, honestly, it's more what is available in your local market. I ended up with an old 80's Honda 500cc motorcycle. It was fun and great to learn on but it had a huge fairing (top heavy). I rode it ...

Re: SWB's path to financial independence

In relation to rural broadband, I found AT&T actually offers a nice LTE data package:

https://www.att.com/internet/fixed-wireless.html

I think that is enough data that I could work from home over LTE for a whole month. Right now, I have a dongle from AT&T that gives me 20 GB/month for $23 but $60 ...

Re: SWB's path to financial independence

@jacob Oops, I meant Starlink -- SpaceX is needed for Starlink or at least seems to be part of the reason SpaceX is happening.

Also, we've had satellite internet before but this is different: SpaceX’s prototype internet satellites are good enough for gaming, Elon Musk says .

In looking locally for ...

We're going to go look at an unusual property for this area in that it is a 2 bedroom main house with a 1 bedroom apartment and another studio / almost 1 bedroom (suspect missing closet but has separate sleeping room). The price is steep however it is in a good location for us along with good school ...

Re: Pammys Path

One thought on heat: I don't know the getting started costs but maybe an outdoor wood boiler would work? You basically burn the wood outside away from your home and, I think, use liquid/coolant with a pump to bring the heat into the home. So kind of just like how central AC works -- just heating ...

Side business has contract signed from second customer! Wahoo! That doubles our revenue. Really exciting to go from 1 to 2. It's been a long time coming. But things are starting to pick up steam.

Another thing to consider with wall tents is that they aren't exactly insulated. My brother has one and he has one of those stoves. He uses it to camp up in the mountains in Colorado when the goes Elk hunting. I went one year. It was really nice and warm when we went to sleep on our cots with our ...

Okay, I think I could see how this would work for me. Screen cover isn't enough for me. I'd need some solid shade. I'm thinking maybe beach veranda would be perfect if I could find a spot by the beach in Mexico that wasn't too populated but still had okay internet (even if cellular). Have to go on a ...

Re: SWB's path to financial independence

Hit the last day of a church rummage sale and scored a boxed copy of P90X with all the DVDs, some books and a garage door opener that I gambled would work for the missing one at our rental. And it does! That was a very happy coincidence and made both of us, particularly my wife though, very happy. I ...
