Re: Declining invitations strategically

I do like the indirectness of the Dragline- forgetful/other plans approach. if only the date was already set. I'm going to need a lot of activities to cover All the Days. Plan an ERE meetup, for a schedule conflict, Chris--Excellent idea! I wonder, has anyone held a meet up in Western Washington, USA?

Re: Declining invitations strategically

Sound like scheduling conflict is the way to go if I'm going to be 'nice'. I'm thinking of going with "My Netflix queue is full and these movies aren't going to watch themselves!" If I'm taking the honesty approach, which seems harder but more sustainable, I think the answer is that I can't satisfy ...

Declining invitations strategically

My co-worker sent out an invitation to our group of 6 to go to a baseball game in the city as a team building event we’ve been talking about doing for months. A few said, “I’m in!” right away, but I haven’t answered for like a week because... I really don’t want to go.I’ve been trying to formulate a...

Congratulations to you and your wife for great race finishing times.

And, I think you both did the right thing to turn the money in.

Re: Running and Foot Races this Summer for ERErs

I agree, stand@desk, it's fun adventure to run in the city early or late when there's less traffic and people. About low key races, I think I once read about some races that are long, unsupported, sans porta potties. I thought they were called Bare Ass, but when I did a search for that term, I came ...

Re: Running and Foot Races this Summer for ERErs

Thanks for this topic. I have run (slowly) in something like 50 organized races, lots of 5Ks, but also a few triathlons and half marathons, one terrible, rainy Portland marathon. (Never again!) I did my favorite12k race about 8 yrs in a row (until this year.) I guess I am in the midst of a break fro...

Re: Self-Actualization: How To

An interesting exploration of the idea of self actualization is found in the Peggy Blumquist character of Fargo season 2. It's comic, sure you betcha, but also points out that sometimes what we are good at and meant to do with ourselves is hidden in plain sight.

Re: simplicity homework- a journal

Exciting news-- we paid off the mortgage! I sort of feel like I won the lottery and should quit my job, butmaybe I'll hold off a bit. I'm reading a book called *Living High: An unconventional biography.* by June Burn. She's talking about many of the topics we like here, but in 1940. It's fun to read...

Re: How much do you worry about waste?

@peanut. Good discussion topic. I'll just say, YES, I worry about this quite a lot. I make many decisions every week based on what to purchase or not based on the non-biodegradable waste (I.e. plastic) it would produce. I compost all my food scraps. But, my weakness is paper towels. They are so hand...

Re: simplicity homework- a journal

@sea, thanks for the comment. Sorry to say I don't have much to tell about insurance rates. Since both DH and I are solidly covered through workplace plans, I haven't had to look into my state's plan. I do notice that there are shifts in service delivery because of the ACA. For example, my friend's ...

Re: simplicity homework- a journal

Happy November! Haven’t written in a while. Just haven't felt like getting on the computer in my off time after spending all day at it the rest of the time, I suppose. Yesterday, I took a Sunday nap on the couch and heard my DH opening and closing drawers in our room. He came upstairs with a stack o...

simplicity homework- a journal: guilt and other lady problems

It is a Monday afternoon, and I am at home. Such a strange morning. I decided that I really need to exercise in the morning, so I can 1. be fully awake upon arriving at work, (rather than feeling sleepy and useless for an hour), and 2. so I can be awesomely fit and trim. So, I set my alarm for 5 am....

simplicity homework- a journal

Job update: time passes quickly when you’re working 40 hours a week. I’m enjoying my job so much, except for the getting up early and ironing my clothes part. I have great co-workers, a lot of autonomy and variety, and when I go home, I don’t have any papers to grade. I realize I’m feeling much happ...

Re: Here's why women feel cold in the office

At my new office, this summer I discovered my co workers frequently use space heaters to warm up when it is a balmy 80 to 90 degrees outside. I agree, it's goddamn cold in there! Whyyy?! But When my nose starts to run, I put on a scarf and sweater. I'd like to lay eyes on the electric bill to see ho...

Hi Ether, I'm enjoying your journal. Great job on your net worth! It's interesting you talk about your job and computer security. I was talking with my son who is about your age about good job prospects for the future and I think computer security is huge growth area and there will be a demand for t...

simplicity homework- a journal

I've completed a week at the new job. The people in my group are fantastic, and I'm excited about what I will be doing and learning about BUT the organization is in a state of, what can I call it... disequilibrium? The organization merged with/was bought out by a larger organization a couple of year...

Re: simplicity homework- a journal

Oh boy...This ranking seems like it might cause disagreement or dismay for those who got degrees in something lower on the complexity scale! But then, as someone who was English major, maybe I am over-analyzing--it's a skill I honed when writing for ten pages about short stories that were only two p...

Re: simplicity homework- a journal

@ jacob This is great advice, and comes on the heels of my son deciding maybe to change his major just a little in light of the number of hours in a day... And I wish I could have a set of steps (an algorithm?) like this to quantify and decide with some certainty every life decision! If someone coul...

Re: simplicity homework- a journal

@peanut Thanks for your comments. His university requires students to get a 2.0 or better in courses required for the major. Also, this is the minimum prerequisite for taking the next course in the series. (for example, taking Math 125 requires a 2.0 in math 124.) He has a few sub-2.0, so not totall...
