Re: Man Who Chases 2 Rabbits Catches None

I prefer "If you only have one arse, you can't sit on two horses." Apparently a Hungarian proverb, but you know how accurate quote attributions are... I too tend to make changes gradually. I think perhaps the only time I consciously made a large switch in direction was on changing my cours...

Re: Internationalist

March Update Savings rate for March: 58.3%. That’s as high a savings rate as I can remember ever having. I foresee April being fairly high as well, maybe not quite as high. After that, I think I’ll be running into some more expenses, but the first half of this year has been good for savings. I’d fel...

Re: Freeform economic manipulation.

Unfortunately the diagrams and equations seem to have disappeared, but did any of you read Yanis Varoufakis during the brief period he collaborated with Valve? An example: http://blogs.valvesoftware.com/economics/arbitrage-and-equilibrium-in-the-team-fortress-2-economy/ As an economist who (once upo...

Re: Hello from France !

I see where I caused confusion. I did not mean to imply that Annecy is cheap! It's beautiful, very touristy, and probably somewhat constrained by geography - not a cheap city. But I did think that more broadly, the Savoie region is fairly cheap. I guess that it's true, when I was visiting I had a Sw...

Re: Fasting Can Regenerate Your Immune System

I tried out fasting in December. I was suspending eating from the evening meal on Sunday (and Wednesday), through to the evening meal on Monday (and Thursday). So roughly two 22-hour fasts. I got sick late December and didn’t really feel up to modifying my habits through until about now, so I’m back...

Re: Hello from France !

Bonjour! Jusque récemment j'habitais en Genève, près d'Annecy. Je visitais votre ville seulement deux fois. Annecy is gorgeous, if I had a car I probably would have visited more often but the coach from Geneva is not so convenient. I think that region of France is really nice, and it is definitely n...

February Update Savings rate for February: 57.2%. First time since arriving in Addis that my savings rate has breached the 50% barrier! Awesome! Payments started rolling in from DW’s contract, so that contributes to the push. I hope that in the next four months, in which I don’t foresee any major ex...

Re: Sequence of returns risk and early retirement

I also worry about SOR. I am self-aware enough to realise that I started investing around 2009 - and things have been pretty damn easy since then. I think that however I project out my possible retirement/FI dates, I really ought to add at least two years to the timeline because I suspect there'll b...

Re: Expat income, banking, and flag theory

I only briefly heard of flag theory once before, and it was probably on this forum. I think in effect my life kind of qualifies as flag-theory compliant at the moment but it’s more by accident than by design. My taxation situation isn’t replicable by DIYers; I think I’m an edge case in a sense. But ...

Re: Anyone else underwhelmed by the Olympics?

I like the Olympics, although as an Australian yeah the winter variant doesn't really do it for me. I do think it has worth in that it seems to bridge cultural divides quite effectively. I also like the human interest stories - you know, this person worked hard and struggled with x, y or z and now s...

Re: Internationalist

Savings rate for January: 42.6%. Major events this month were a trip to Zanzibar. This served dual purposes – as holiday, and also for the change in visa status of DW so that she can work. It wasn’t a cheap holiday, but it was nice. DW needed to at least fly out of the country and back, so the addit...

Re: Music you make

Well I'm getting dangerously close to calling myself a French speaker, but perhaps I'm inappropriately overconfident. Particularly as I'm no longer in a French-speaking city. Your analogy of the dogs sniffing is humorous and perhaps appropriate. I think we are very different, including probably in m...

Re: Thoughts about respectability

Well lunches seems to be a popular sub-topic in respectability. When I worked for the government people would often compliment each other on how awesome their homemade dishes looked or smelled coming out of the microwave. When I worked in big 4 consulting most people would eat out every day, and ass...

Re: Music you make

I recently put a few tracks on my Soundcloud . I was hoping to finish off a few more and release as an EP on Bandcamp but I've been a bit too busy to compose recently. I have some academic background in music, but after I switched courses I didn't do much with it for a very long time. Just recently ...

Re: Jordan Peterson

It's odd, two weeks ago I'd never heard of this guy and then in the last ten days every website I frequent has exploded with articles about him. I gather he's not new on the intellectual scene but he was certainly under my radar until recently. I won't comment on him directly but more on some of the...

Re: Music you like?

Although the album came out before it, 'Cowboy Dan' from Lonesome Crowded West could have been written about GWB's presidency. I've seen The Mars Volta play numerous times and they give a great live show. Sometimed if I find myself alone in the house I play 'Cassandra Gemini' off Frances the Mute lo...

Savings rate for December: 37.1%. Books read: Confederacy of Dunces (Toole, definitely a funny book. Described in the blurb as laugh-out-loud funny, but I wouldn’t say that, for me I just really liked the cleverness of it and the absurdity of its protagonist), The Honorary Consul (Greene, ending a b...

Re: Ethics and Viruses

My organisation grants the same amount of sick leave to me regardless of my location. Since moving from Geneva to Addis Ababa I have found this to be a problem. The disease burden is much higher here.
