Re: Value of ERE in a COVID World

Safety is a spectrum and any notion of complete safety is an unattainable ideal. However, fair enough that we can try to shift the personal needle of safety - and that any action to do so will be more or less effective depending on the scenario we're talking about. For instance, totally agree that i...

Re: Stock Market Blood Bath

I’m also curious if the negative feedback you’re receiving here is more politically motivated. Not on my part. I voted for Brexit and still think it was the right call. I just don't share Bankai's optimism on trade deals or short-term economic outlook. Oh and to answer original thread question, I'm...

Re: Stock Market Blood Bath

biggest uncertainty out of the way (markets don't like uncertainties) Personally, I don't see that the uncertainty is significantly out of the way - we haven't meaningfully left the EU whilst we're in the transition period, and the future relationship is a much more significant negotiation than the...

Re: Stock Market Blood Bath

the idea was that with stable majority Brexit would be finally sorted and stocks would have decent few years ahead. Not the theme of the thread - sorry - but sounds like a dodgy assumption to me, regardless of COVID-19. My working assumption is that we end up with a fairly ideological Brexit which ...

Just shows how l...

Re: leveraging into equities?

Fwiw, I am doing something similar to what you are suggesting, namely taking a mortgage on my currently-unencumbered home. If you like, not having had a mortgage previously has been similar to holding a large cash position, in as much as I had - and previously didn't exercise - the option to hold ba...

Re: Egg's journal

Thanks @cimorene 12 :) Just a small update. Our son has now arrived (a month ago - he's an adorable little chap) so I took a month off work to be with wife and baby. It was awesome. It also all makes me feel pretty lucky to live in the UK (and to be with my employer) for a few reasons: 1) My wife go...

Re: Freedom through Frugality: Sabaka's Journal

Hi. Having been in the British military (won't self-dox any further although I think I've probably posted more detail on here before) I can assure you it can be an awesome career if it's the right fit for you. Wise choice imo to swerve infantry in general, though if you're tough enough for the Royal...

Hey @2Birds1Stone Sorry for epic delay in response! I'm alive and well - and glad to see you're still going strong on these forums. To cut a long story short, since June 2016 when I last posted. I've moved house about 5 times, lived in three different countries, bought a house (in cash), bought a ca...

Re: Career advice for a 25 year old

Specifically, no. But from a practical standpoint, I don't think you will find the answer through research and theorizing, but only through trial-and-error. So head down the first path that seems reasonably decent, but give yourself permission to change or reverse course after a year or few. Fair c...

Career advice for a 25 year old

Shamelessly ripping off Noided's thread because you're all such a bunch of wise owls -25 years old -Undergrad in Theology (2.i) from Cambridge (Mickey Mouse degree from a well-respected uni) -Four years as military officer but now being medically discharged so no further opportunity there -Decent at...

Re: Brexit

I've already worked for 20 years while Dutchmen have been able to "waltz" into the UK so I feel I've already done "my bit". Unless those 20 years were in the Netherlands, I disagree that you've done "your bit" for the Dutch. The British, for whom you have done your bit...

Re: Brexit

I see no leaver has disputed my earlier post from today about Netherlands immigration. So do you admit that some British people that would have been able to live in Europe may not be able to do so in future? And are you happy about that? I think it's fair enough that you shouldn't be able just to r...

Re: Brexit

They are on the far right but they do seem to have made inroads into Labours voter base, which is very strange really. One of my sons friends is a UKIP voter however if you knew anything about his background he should be Labour through and through. This article may go part way to explaining that. h...

Re: Brexit

Maybe you don't care about that, but it is the number 1 concern for me. I am concerned that you don't seen to appreciate the compromise inherent in democracy and about your mistaken impression that the country is obliged to vote line with your personal priorities. I might be alright as I'm reasonab...

Re: Brexit

What about our freedom to live where we want in Europe? Did you ever consider that? Of course. I'm slightly offended by what seems to be a fairly prevalent view in the Remain camp that Brexit supporters only voted that way because they didn't think about the decision carefully enough or were too st...

Re: Brexit

Its not only @vexed87 that you can blame (here) for this. I also voted leave So did I. Still utterly shocked by the result though, even though it gave me almost 4% increase in value of investments, which should make me cheerful. Really uneasy about what we've done here, though. Doesn't mean it was ...
