Re: Pedal2Petal's post-ERE life

Just do it and it will work out much better than you think. I promise you that your only regret will be that you didn't have one sooner. Have you ever noticed that most people who have one kid, inevitably at least have one more? There's a reason for that. This so depends. I know people who regret t...

A lot of the DIY rainwater collection systems used garbage can or industrial reservoirs. Make sure you understand the effect of UV light on plastics before you invest time and effort on these systems.

Shearing is not that hard. I watched a few videos and got a friend to help hold the sheep the first time. I went from 1.5 hours/sheep to less than 30 minutes including hoof trimming (yes, I know how fast professionals are). Some sheep are more ticklish than others and that makes it harder. Take your...

Re: Jobs that maximize your chance of meeting unconventional people

Look in the margins and fringes rather than in mainstream society. I think unconventional people can be found in many professions. Here are some I know nurse/health researcher/farmer homesteader/90 year old still living on her own teacher/traveler/artist artist/self-described subsistence farmer teac...

trying to manage a creature that carries more than ten times your own weight can be challenging.
This violates our #1 animal rule: never keep an animal with bigger shits than your own! Thus dog, sheep, chickens and ducks but no cow or horse.

Re: Do you buy organic grains/rice/beans?

Another reason to buy organic is to minimize the use of pesticides, antibiotics, synthetic fertilizers and growth hormones, regardless of whether you see ingesting these substances as a problem or not.
Look at the guidelines for pesticide application - why subject others to that risk?

Here's a "agri-food innovation" European project - 2,000 square meters - grow your own food (http://www.2000m2.eu/story/).
I can't figure out how much food they actually grew.

Re: The doctor who beat big tobacco - Divestment, investment, corporate social responsibility and pensions

I guess if I don't feel that tobacco companies are misleading their customers of the risks (was the case years ago but not now), why would I have a problem investing in them? Re: Man who quit high-flying job to go off the grid and live in a tree house

Moral: Don't have kids.
Kids are not a valid excuse not to have and live wild dreams. Live your dreams while kids are young, live your dreams when kids grow up. Life is full of change and opportunities.
