Re: Matty's Journal

So I’ve been back from my Vipassana course for a few weeks now. The apprehension I had was mostly unwarranted and I really enjoyed the course. It was a good way to learn a meditation technique thoroughly and for many days afterwards I felt immune to any form of stress. The teacher recommends 2 hours...

Re: Zalo's Journey

Wow, that was a great read! I agree that sounds like an ideal life! It seems Ray spent at least 3 years in the corporate world after college and kept working seasonally for the next 9 or so years, exhausting his savings each year. Looks like things turned around once he started to make some money fr...

Re: Matty's Journal

Work Working part-time is amazing! The difference in lifestyle between working 40 and working 20 hours per week is in orders of magnitude. As I am at work less I find I am engaged in actual work most of the time when there and this makes my days go super quick. Combined with 2 or 3 day workweeks an...

Re: Matty's Journal

Four weeks into semi-ERE and it’s time for an update! Q1 Goal Progression Fitness progression is going well. With my newfound freedom I have had plenty of time to keep up my workout routine and have also been hiking a lot. I have also been eating like a machine averaging around 3500 calories a day. ...

Re: Canoeing South through the Connecticut River from Amherst, MA to the Ocean!

Sounds great!

I have a river trip on my 'adventure to do list'. In particular to kayak the length of the Murray River which is about 2,500kms and 3 months. I'm hoping to do some smaller weeklong trips as a trial run.

I would definitely aim to catch a lot of fish!

Re: Matty's Journal

So today is my last Friday at the office EVER!!! I just adjusted my timesheet to reflect my new hours which will be alternating weeks of Mon, Tues & Mon, Tues Weds. I also added an out of office schedule in Outlook for the days I am not at work. I called them weekends although they are longer than m...

Re: Matty's Journal

So I’m back from my trip to Hamilton Island (my gf managed to win an all-inclusive holiday for us)! We stayed in a very fancy resort with amazing breakfasts, complimentary tea served by a waiter on our own private beach and unlimited use of the small sailing catamaran, snorkelling equipment, kayaks ...

Re: C40's Journal

I’m enjoying the van updates C40! Before I started full-time work I bought an old VW and spent a few months doing it up and then solo travelling in it. Some of my happiest days were spent working on the van in anticipation of my adventures. Enjoy it! I will definitely be allocating some time for a v...

Good to hear that it’s going well man! Looks like your set to improve on a lot of skills, earn some money and have a blast at the same time. The perfect set up! Hopefully the impressive local is happy to share some knowledge.

Re: Deliberately coasting to FI?

This is similar to my semi-ERE strategy! To me it seems like a very well-rounded strategy and perhaps more in line with Jacobs philosophy than the more common ‘work for X years to achieve 3% SWR and your done with work for good’. I am uncomfortable with placing too much dependence on my financial ca...

Re: Matty's Journal

Finances So I am now officially invested in the share market! Last week I bought $5000 each of VAS (ASX 300 index) and VGS (MSCI world ex Aus index). This leaves me with approximately 10% of my assets in shares and 90% in cash. Still a highly conservative allocation but an important first step for ...

Re: Matty's Journal

Lately I’ve been reading a book called “Finding Your Own North Star” by Martha Beck. To summarise very briefly, it’s a book about how to get in touch with your “essential self” to guide you in the actions you take in your life. I’d encourage anyone who feels they need a major change in their life to...

Re: Alastair Humphreys Adventurer: Microadventures

I’m a big fan of Alastair Humphreys! I’ve done about a half dozen Microadventures over the past year! It’s hard to convince friends to join me any more frequently than that. At this stage I’ve only ever done them on a Friday night straight from work. I will have all my gear packed into a small backp...

Re: Australian Managed Funds: CFS vs Vanguard

Sorry for the terminology confusion. Stevo is right distribution = dividend and growth = capital growth as far as I am aware. I have looked at the ETFs. They seem to be quite popular with the index investors in Australia due to lower expense ratios. Chad, unfortunately I don’t think that kind of no-...

Australian Managed Funds: CFS vs Vanguard

I’m wondering whether anyone here has any experience or opinions on Colonial First State (CFS) or Vanguard Australia’s index fund products. Australian indexing options are fewer and more expensive than the US. These two companies seem like the main two index fund options in Australia. To keep it sim...

Re: Replacing milk with water

I stopped having milk in my oatmeal about 6 months ago. Like slsdly said a bit of fat (coconut oil) and sugar (fruit) makes up for any loss in flavour. Still can't manage to enjoy cold muesli or cereal with water though! Is taking b12 supplements any cheaper than purchasing fortified products? My pa...

Re: Moving slowly

Yes! I love this state of mind. I lived this way for over a year between finishing uni and starting my first full-time job. Plenty of time to play music, work in the garden, work on my campervan, go for walks and bike rides to nowhere, sleep in if I felt like I needed it. Lately I've found it more a...

I particularly enjoyed the Tim Ferriss 3 part interview with Kevin Kelly which I listened to yesterday. Kevin's an interesting guy. He talks about a lot of cool stuff including frugality, tiny houses, and living like he was going to die in 6 months! http://fourhourworkweek.com/2014/08/29/kevin-kelly/

Re: Matty's Journal

I've been thinking about planning a small adventure in a couple of months as a way to wind down from the full-time work I’ve been doing for the past 3 and a half years. Originally I was looking at some kind of hiking/bike trip but now I’m thinking of something quite different. I’ve discovered that t...
