Re: Living in Omaha, Nebraska

I've been there several times for the Berkshire annual meeting-loved it every time. Very walkable, seemed inexpensive, loved the way that they dealt with the river flowing through town, the museums were great, coffee and beer was local, etc. The only issue was the weather... Recommend that you ask o...

Re: How to prepare for the next recession?

In addition to size of nut (very important!), get some income producing skills that will be useful in a downturn. For me, this is sales. A company is loathe to cut it's sales force and will cut budget in other areas first. If you're one of the few that are s producing an income in a major recession ...

Re: Professionalism - Please Explain?

I'd say the main thing you need to remember is that when you're at work**, you are a worker bee... For everything happening at work, you have to view and respond to them through the lens of "Olaz, employee of XYZ". You will establish a sort of 'work Personality'. You have to develop your own workin...

Re: Trump - Clown Genius

But really, this morning (comment about Berkeley and National Prayer Time) I am done w/ Trump. This is fascinating-what specifically about his comments on that day struck you as different? Getting rid of the Johnson amendment was a part of his campaign platform since at least last summer and defund...

Re: What's the fastest way to earn money to ERE?

I feel like a broken record, but I'll repeat myself only because I wish somebody had told me this in college. If you are in the humanities (i.e. not engineering, computer sci, etc) I believe that the quickest way to FU money for the majority of people to is through technology sales. 1. The barrier t...

Re: How to Make 100k /Yr?

I made that amount in my first full year of technology sales.

Important to note that most technology sales don't require an understanding of technology; the soft skills of the humanities are what recruiters look for.

Re: Hamstring tightness

I had similar issues with my hamstrings, but have mostly overcome them in the past year or so. The key for me was making sure that my hamstrings, lower back and glutes were all stretched before a workout, not just my hamstrings. I use a variation on "child's pose" that my wife showed me-it seems to ...

Re: Did I fuck up by not majoring in Computer Science? STEM Vs. Liberal Arts

Short answer-no, you didn't. Achieving a good work/life balance while saving for FI can be done with any sort of degree. I have a Philosophy degree and will be FIRE in two years (at 35). If I was as skilled/intelligent/capable as the other people on this forum I could pull the cord tomorrow. What ot...

Re: What Are You Doing Right Now?

DW and I are wrapping up a 1.5 year kitchen renovation. Skills learned include, plumbing, electrical, tile, cabinetry (from scratch), some HVAC. We got quotes of 60k for the project and are completing it ourself for about 27k. Not terribly frugal, but the value of the house will be increased by roug...

Thanks for posting this-it was a good read.

Tough to defend those choices through the lens of FI or ERE. Kinda reminds me of what people were doing back before the great recession.

@Ego: I'd never heard of these guys before, thanks! I've been interested in Open Book Management for a while, and would be curious to know exactly how much financial information is shared with different levels of management and front line workers. Gross, Net, full P/L statements, compensation, etc? ...

Re: Hello from Listmaker! 20F US

@JL13-I just sent you a PM. In general I think my path (retail sales-->Entry Level B2B-->Some other role inside the bigger organization) is something that can be replicated pretty easily. The "trick" is that entry level retail sales are always hiring (even during the downturn in 09/10, and many larg...

To skip the degree and start making money then: Extrovert = sales Introvert = programming ? Corporate sales is probably not like what you think it is. Typically it involves coordinating a technical representative meeting with the customer, so that the techie isn't saying the wrong things and the cu...

This year, myself, DW, Mr. 1500 and his wife are all confirmed-we'd love for anybody from the ERE forums to join us! I'd love to go, but hotels and airlines are gouging prices this year! Are you flying into KCI? If so we can split a car if convenient. How are you handling lodging? Yes, prices have ...

Re: A Different Perspective of Walden

Just seems pointless to me to squat and take a long dump on a book published some 160 years ago The author is ultimately measured and paid in webclicks; it's in her best interest to write something that will get clicks, not something that is novel, or fair, or true. Her work may be all of those thi...

Glad to see this journal; you're right about the majority of content in the ERE/FIRE communities being from a white collar POV. Your end of 2018 date is my FIRE date as well so I'll be following along.

DW and I already got a room (AirBNB), but would love to meet up with anybody from the ERE community while we're there. We flew into OMA, but I think we used some frequent flyer points so am not sure about the cost.

J_L13, you may want to post on the MMM or Boglehead forum as well?
