Re: When did you discover ERE?

Have always known that I had to save and earn a passive income because you never know whats round the corner. Learnt that as a child. Not something we talked about we just had some really difficult circumstances completely outside my parents control. We did talk about finances in general though and ...

Re: ..and suddenly, a gap year was sprung upon me.

for me it was a chance to practice early retirement and see if it suited me. It was a chance to walk for miles on the hills, go swimming. go wandering for the day and just take a wrapped lunch. no cares, no responsibilities outside of what we do in our non paid life. its a chance to practice living ...

Re: early retired too extreme?

some people find routine tasks such as doing the dishes good for mental health. focusing on the moment. as time goes by my meals have become more like snacks. I cook for people with small appetites and they prefer really simple meals which means my dishes are reducing in number. this morning one per...

Re: insurance, moving on and choices

you're right Riggerjack, I need to be proactive. I've been schooling myself up. the private insurer will do another engineering report and a geotechnical report which will provide lots of useful info. they will prepare their strategy. I would only get prices when I have their final repair strategy a...

Re: insurance, moving on and choices

Re: Ebola and fragility

One day I was watching the BBC and they showed the very first aid workers entering a war zone, and there she was. its an amazing organisation and the people who work there are one of a kind. definately wort...

Re: Should I work the extra hours...

I'd also warn against burnout. when you say retirement, have you got a plan for it. perhaps you want to work a couple of days a week. is it 5 years of the extra hours versus 7 years of 40 hours? then go for the 7 years. are you planning on having children, go for the 5, you have children, family com...

Re: Retirement is a positive experience

depends on the person. some people see their purpose in life is defined by the world of work and using their time to make money. in this case retirement is a negative. some people, as much as they tell themselves its not true, are defined by their job title or pay packet. I recommend everyone tries ...

Re: insurance, moving on and choices

Thanks Simple Life for being so honest. I agree. moving may be the most financially safe thing to do. we all have a different psyche. If I left it would not only be a fire sale, I would feel a huge sense that I have abandoned the place I belong. whatever happens, I agree I do need to protect myself....

I'm on land in an area that has been categorised as the most damaged soil. its sandy. they've drilled the site, but haven't shown me the analysis. Each site is quite different. I have a couple of questions about the soil which still need answers. like soil bearing capacity. apparently they're suppos...

and the other possibility is I say yes to a repair, they pull the house apart and it turns into a rebuild, which does happen and they've told me it could as they are having to rebuild a chunk of the foundations as well as relevel etc. In which case I would be in temporary accomodation and the existi...

George the original one. Thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts You're right. I'm FI, I could finance the reconstruction. but we're in the middle of a huge rebuild so everything is really expensive and my house is quite livable - its not unsafe. Its cracked, uneven and some doors and windo...

My house was structurally damaged. the land has dropped closer to the water table and the land is more prone to flooding from sea level rises and river inundation, although it never has. the sewerage is not perfect but its working and if necessary i could set up a ...

Re: Your Legacy

Thats interesting Toska. Went for a bike ride yesterday. in amongst the broken roads, the empty sections, the houses still to be demolished theres a house. Lots of people leave messages on them thanking the house for whatever reason. This one just says. All we have is memories.
