Re: Insane Propane vs. Microwave Mania

I was surprised to read somewhere that a microwave oven is 50% efficient. A gas stove range is 38% efficient. Is that right? This is in line with what I've read. Gas stoves' problem is that so much heat is lost around the cooking vessel as waste heat. Depending on what you're cooking it's hard to b...

Re: Smashter's Great Adventure

Our current problem area is groceries. We spent $1,764 last month [...] This is a battle I am not willing to fight right now. For one, we are only averaging $94/month at restaurants this year, which is way down for us. For another, DW cooks unbelievably delicious meals like 4-5 nights a week and sh...

Am I secretly a Type A careerist? I think the answer to this is: "only sometimes." At least that's how it is with me. As you pointed out at the start, these feeling come to the surface because you're spending a lot of time on LinkedIn. It's a whole environment of careerists trying to out-...

Re: Smaller is better

Great idea for a topic. So much of the buying public does their purchasing like they're shopping for warehouse space. When looking at cars, I feel like I'm the only person who cares about the exterior dimensions and turning radius. Maybe it's because of my negative view of stuff: I consider purchase...

Re: Buying a New Computer + A Sad Story

Another concern was the tremendous power consumption of modern computers. True, but thanks to better frequency scaling, SSDs, and other factors, they also idle at lower power, which is most of the day. Back in my gaming days, frames/sec was my benchmark. Now when I replace a PC, my benchmark is kWh...

Re: Starting from scratch in the minimum wage system

I sought out Scratch Beginnings after reading Nickel and Dimed . Definitely good to read back-to-back. N&D was a college reading assignment, well before I learned about ERE, and even then I felt that the author wasn't really trying to live cheap. It was like she had an imagined what "poor&q...

Also, DW was just commenting on the fact that apparently I wash my hands very quickly. I laughed it off, but maybe I need to step it up! If there's one thing I changed during COVID, it was improving my handwashing. Rubbing two soapy flat hands together under running water isn't great technique. Soa...

Was rather disheartened to hear my dad say "I think your degree is part of the reason you aren't having any luck on the job market". I have a masters degree in chemistry, which I've used in a variety of roles within the pharmaceutical industry. He says I should go back to school and learn...

Re: Publicly listed companies and anti-consumer practices

Publicly-traded companies can be subject to negative incentives, but so can private companies and, for that matter, individuals. Warren Buffet has long said, "short focus is not conducive to long profits." Berkshire Hathaway doesn't provide quarterly earnings estimates, and their annual re...

Re: Embracing Solitude: INTJ's Journey Towards Retirement

In your current job, you're trading misery for money. Is there an amount of money that would make the misery worthwhile? If, as you say, you're near the top end of salary for your role, then your employer is unable to replace you at your current rate. That's a good position to be in. If you told the...

Re: Low Income, Early 20s, Anti-Wage-Slave Living: Walwen's Journal

I wonder about dividend income, like the people who just hold a bunch of SCHD or JEPI. I know you could just buy and sell other stock to the same effect, but there's a major psychological benefit to just getting that dividend income without buying or selling. [...] But how does it compare to just d...

Anyone who has a clue what a plumber with no college degree can do for a job when they realize they simply can no longer physically do the work anymore, I'm all ears
Teach at a trade school? Still be able to utilize the skills, with less demands on the body.
