Re: Ad Astra per Aspera [Journal]

I love reading "first contact" experiences. Welcome to the alien American world where people move around on gasoline-powered wheelchairs and margarine comes in the form of breath spray. Pro tip: spray the buttery flavoring directly into your mouth before eating the popcorn; saves your fingers from g...

Can he unroll the IRA back into the old 401k if the new 401k doesn't come through?
Probably not. Company 401k plans are usually only open to current employees. Most employers allow former employees to maintain their accounts, but not to contribute more.

Re: New Employer - No 401(k)

You get no pre-tax benefit and there are some other rules to watch out for, but I didn't have a normal IRA so those rules didn't apply to me. The benefit is the Roth access if your income is too high to do a Roth directly. Yeah, it's those "other rules" that would be problematic in this case. Hrist...

Re: Going without Healthcare

6. If a person avoids standard healthcare they can largely avoid the 3rd leady cause of death. “medical mistakes would be the third leading cause of U.S. deaths” I would be careful about how you interpret this, due to selection bias. The people who died by medical error may have been kept alive for...

The Dirt uses fine bentonite clay. If you'd consider a drier paste, maybe find a supply of the stuff and create your own mix, sans baking soda?

Re: No cell phone plan (Freedompop + Wifi?)

can someone explain to me how Freedompop works? They make their money on fees and marketing. It's partly a freemium model (you try the free service, like it, and upgrade your package), partly nickel-and-dime fees (2 cents per MB over the free limit), and partly marketing spam. They also have a lowe...

Anyone else excited for the T/TWX decision? Care to make any predictions? :D
I think it'll happen. It's a vertical merger. Comcast-NBC is the blueprint. The only question is if the government will appeal the ruling.

Haha, no, you won't find a REX potato peeler in your furnished US kitchen, unless the furnisher paid a visit to the best salesmen in the world.

You might consider also backing up your data in the cloud before leaving, in case your bag is lost.

Re: Negative sentiment in society against living frugally in Germany (Austria, Swiss)

USA seems more conservative than other western countries to me in so many ways. The prevalence of religion stands out. Depends on the lens you look through. True, no country has more megachurches than the US. But it's also the birthplace of Tinder and Grindr. And also the the global porn delivery n...

Re: Investments Trade Log

Index funds based on S&P 500 will add ABMD. Index funds based on the S&P Midcap 400 will sell. Funds like VTSAX already hold it. The S&P 500 is a weighted average. ABMD will have a low weight. You can check major holders of a similarly-sized company already in the index (such as GWW) to estimate of ...

Re: Friendships changing

I know this is ERE -- so it's probably decades away for most of us -- but eventually all the old friends will hit traditional retirement, right? And hopefully, some of them might be able to hit "normal" early retirement (55ish). Once those friends join the job-free lifestyle, is there any chance of ...

I was under the impression I would still need some form of 'roof over my head' and suspect its NOT going to be $450 (Incl utils) unless I am in SEA.The car - I am considering selling it - have a loan + depreciation = not much 'income' at the end of the day. Am I missing something in terms of saving...

Re: Negotiating raise - experiences, techniques and more

This time I will have sheet of paper with what I accomplished. That's a good start. It's not sure to result in a better outcome, but assuming your boss does manage many employees, it is important to show the value you are bringing to the company, and to differentiate yourself from your peers. Or mo...

Good news everyone! I’m going to the United States of America! ... I’m excited to experience life in the USA first-hand. I’ve never lived abroad, not even an exchange semester (was too expensive then). We Europeans have our stereotypes about Americans – let’s see if they hold true. Congratulations!...

Re: Experiment: ERE Share House

Imagine if there were a handful of ERE "houses" dotted at various points around the globe, and members paid ahead-of-time for a room in any of the houses, but were free to move around between houses ... it would be kind of like a "club" that you join, and you pay an up-front fee and in exchange, ge...
