Re: Nutritional yeast for dietary protein and fiber?

OK so, according to the paper, nutritional yeast is arguably even better than meat in terms of protein content. This is especially true considering the low cost and the fact that it can be grown from things which are otherwise not edible for humans and animals. This is further enhanced by heating an...

Re: How awesome is slow cooking?

I tried something similar recently for making yogurt overnight. I heated milk to 82C, let it cool to 49C, added some active culture yogurt from the store, and wrapped the pot in a bunch of blankets inside of a box overnight. It made some good yogurt, and the pot was still quite warm the next morning...

Re: Nutritional yeast for dietary protein and fiber?

@theanimal My understanding is that humans and most plants lack the ability to convert things like flour and sugar into essential amino acids, but yeast can make these conversions. That's why nutritional yeast can be produced by feeding a slightly different strain of bread/brewing yeast a diet of ma...

Nutritional yeast for dietary protein and fiber?

Food is one of the biggest expenses for most people. The usual advice is to avoid eating at restaurants and buying pre-prepared food, instead making your own meals from base ingredients. While it's true that these steps can save thousands of dollars, I am also interested in optimizing the recipes an...

Re: Traditional fridge/freezer vs alternative options

@jacob Nice, I think I may give it a try for a month or two and see how the costs compare. I am considering starting a garden for the first time this year - perhaps this would be best combined with a DIY solar dehydrator? I really like blueberries for the health benefits and flavor, but they are qui...

Re: Traditional fridge/freezer vs alternative options

@loutfart Great points, I searched and found several people on Craigslist selling unwashed eggs for a similar price to the supermarket eggs. Maybe they hatched to many chickens? ;) I did a price check on UHT milk and it looks to be around 3-4x the price of regular milk, which would go against my goa...

Re: Buying a home without a job after retirement

As others have said, no one asks about your income or credit history if you can pay cash. Having cash means you have additional opportunities to get a better price if you are willing to consider homes that are foreclosed or otherwise cannot be mortgaged. Some of these homes can be in pretty bad shap...

Traditional fridge/freezer vs alternative options

I think owning a freezer is probably optimal, because it allows taking advantage of bulk pricing and sales. It's also an extremely convenient way to store fruits, vegetables, and meat without sacrificing nutritional value as with canning and dehydration. Generally chest freezers that I would conside...

Thanks for the welcomes! Seems like this is a great community. It reminds me a lot of discussion forums I used to visit all the time when I was a kid - not sure where they all went nowadays.

Hi! Glad to be here.

I'm from the Midwest in the US, and I've been working on achieving FI for the last 8 years. Similar to some other folks on here, I studied science in college (biochemistry) and ended up deciding the career wasn't for me. I dropped out of grad school roughly 8 years ago now. At the time, the idea of ...
