Re: I hate birthdays

For me, the worst part of birthdays is the forced superficial interaction of the "Happy Birthday!" text. These texts create two obligations on me: 1) I'm supposed to reply "Thanks!" 2) I'm supposed to remember their birthday and text "Happy Birthday!" to them in the future Having to reply "Thanks!" ...

Re: Headphone recommendations

When I optimized for quiet, I found combo earplug/headphones most effective, like this: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/31otnHnl0jL._AC_US218_.jpg However, I found this style worked so well that it created a new type of problem, which is that people at work would be talking to me di...

Re: Early Career Advice: Stick it out or find something new

Personally I would leave. You have too much power as a competent engineer to need to stay in a mediocre situation. Plus if you have the energy for it, learning the ropes at a new job is fun and builds your resume. Are you absolutely certain, however, that there are zero comparable jobs in or near yo...

Re: akratic's ERE journal

Well the big news is that we have a healthy and terrific 4 month old son. Becoming a parent has been a tough adjustment, and I plan to write more about that later. The other big news is that I quit the startup right before he was born, although I guess the writing for that was already on the wall in...

Re: akratic's ERE journal

Hey guys, Sorry for the long hiatus. When I began my ERE journey I put almost 100% of myself into it, ignoring nearly every other previous interest or hobby (aside from my partner and friends) to free up more life energy for ERE. This meant I made quick progress on ERE, but there was a hidden price ...

Re: Learning from failure vs learning from success

Well I don't mean to derail this thread, but since I got quoted in the original post, let me try to clarify my stance a bit: for me consuming alcohol is about the same as smashing my head against the wall. So I think the OP in the alcohol thread is asking: How do I go from 10 head-smashes a week to ...

Re: akratic's ERE journal

what has akratic tried? early morning sun therapy? evening dark therapy? melatonin? diets? sounds like an easy $100k :D Haha, akratic likes brute's style. :) Here is the core sleep problem: if my brain gets going in the middle of the night it cannot be stopped. It'd be like trying to fall asleep wh...

Re: akratic's ERE journal

Yeah Tyler9000 that makes sense to me. I started reading the Big Book from Alcoholics Anonymous to get more perspective on addiction. There's an early chapter that talks about taking stock of all the people that have been harmed by your addiction, all the people you borrowed money from to get anothe...

Re: Alcohol moderation

I drink in moderation, but not because I've mastered alcohol, but more because I don't like it. I don't like how it messes up my sleep and my body and my mind. I don't like crutches, and I don't need it to relax or socialize. However, I do need it to dance. And I also need to drink occasionally to h...

Re: akratic's ERE journal

@FBeyer, that's a good question, and I don't take any offense to it. The first part of the answer is that I haven't been able to recreate my favorite parts about being in school on my own. It wasn't just learning that I liked but: 1) being surrounded by smart people who had lots of free time 2) havi...

Re: akratic's ERE journal

@Noedig, thanks for checking out the Akratic app. I wish I could time myself out naturally after two hours. Like if that skill was for sale in some futuristic real-life RPG shop for $100k I'd pull the trigger without hesitation. I'd also spend another $100k on "ability to fall asleep easily and slee...

Re: akratic's ERE journal

@UrbanHermit, I have no regrets about my adventures and enjoyed them while I was doing them. I even put them #2 on the all time adult lifestyle list. Adventuring is where I met my fiance and solidified my relationship with her, which is the best thing I have going for me. 30s-akratic would tell 20s-...

Re: akratic's ERE journal

Interesting point about others wanting to contribute and maybe not feeling able to on a topic like ERE, long-term travel, or a thru-hike. I think I feel like I am "contributing" most in conversations when I am passionately engaged in what the other person is talking about, actively listening, and tr...

Re: akratic's ERE journal

@Tyler I read your last post above shortly after you made it, and thought I understood it at the time. I just re-read it though after another two months of thinking about these people, and I have to say, you often put things eloquently, but this is especially potent: "The trick is to sort the natura...

Re: akratic's ERE journal

One of the more fascinating parts of having had some interesting life experiences -- such as hiking the Appalachian Trail or traveling for a few years in a row -- is seeing how other people react to these experiences when they naturally come up in conversation. Or maybe I should say fail to react. H...

Re: Boston meetup

Too bad we failed to generate sufficient momentum for this Boston ERE meetup. Maybe I was wrong to think we could organize it NYC meetup style with a doodle to negotiate dates. Maybe we need to do it Chicago meetup style instead with an arbitrary date in the title of the thread. Either way I joined ...

Re: Has anyone been through the process of writing a prenup or wishing they had?

I think you misunderstood my proposal, Augustus. We get back what we brought in and then split everything created after the marriage 50/50. This is exactly the default option with no prenup in some states, just not the state we happen to live in. The 7/8 stuff was trying to figure out what happens i...

@Riggerjack, that's such a cool suggestion to agree ahead of time that before litigation can be an option there will be mediation without representation followed by arbitration without representation. Thanks!

Re: Has anyone been through the process of writing a prenup or wishing they had?

Okay having slept on it I consider jacob's solution elegant but for us not worth the mental gymnastics of tracking two independent asset numbers. My draft so far is downstream of Dragline's first post. The one part I added was about inheritance, which I believe prenups are allowed to cover. My guess...
