Re: Anesau - Just Starting Out

@Jean I've heard the same thing about mold being the biggest issue (though I've heard it more in conjuction with a place being hot & humid, rather than cold), so I'll keep an eye out!

Things I'm thinking about this week:

How can I effectively participate in gifting culture? I already moved away ...

Re: Anesau - Just Starting Out

I have lowish muscle and also very little body fat, to the point of being nearly underweight, which is probably just categorically the worst quadrant to be in as far as heat. I'm prioritizing muscle, but it seems like having at least a little more fat would be useful -- I don't care much whether my ...

Re: Jacob's gaming journal

Among my four closest friends now, the two that grew up in a "standard modern" culture had childhoods very similar to mine, and are equally enamored with stories like The Last of the Monsters with Iron Teeth, out of a desire to have had some sort of real life culture or connection to people/places ...

Re: Jacob's gaming journal

I wouldn't trade my running around the redwood forest being chased by half-feral dogs with the other neighborhood kids experiences for anything.

Haha my childhood might have been the perfect inverse of yours. I wasn't allowed outside in our own backyard (surrounded on all sides by brick fence ...

Re: Anesau - Just Starting Out

The overarching goals, outside of fiddling with budget numbers, is just to become less reliant on globalized trade/infrastructure.

Specific subsets I'm thinking about:

Heating/cooling: One benefit of living alone is that I have thermostat control, and I've kept the heat off all winter so far (it ...

Re: Jacob's gaming journal

Interesting.

I assumed there was something I had missed out on, based on stories I heard from older family members of their own childhood. It's possible that this is just another subset of the effect where most people forget long-ago negative memories more than they forget the positive memories ...

Re: Jacob's gaming journal

Just wanted to mention that some of the early posts (especially about online [gaming/culture] being a long-term sustainable replacement to the dwindling joy of tourism and etc.) reminded me very strongly of a blog post about the loss of children's cultures called The Last of the Monsters with the ...

Re: Anesau - Just Starting Out

Correction: apparently my health insurance is $168 per pay period , which actually makes health costs minimum $336/mo assuming the only expense is my insurance premium. This is the cheapest plan my employer offers (they pay a portion of it).

Following the ERE link to ehealthinsurance and looking at ...

Re: Anesau - Just Starting Out

Well, a lot of my life has changed, and I finally got settled and remembered that keeping track of stuff in this journal would be useful to future-me! ...it only took me something like a year and a half.

General update: didn't keep doing the freelance work on top of full-time work, but I did ...

Re: Anesau - Just Starting Out

Yes, pretty much that.

I have a technical job and only a little over 1 year of full time experience - my worst case scenario is that I quit my main job, the contracts dry up soon (and/or I'm too stupid to complete them), then I can't find a new job quickly, and the longer I have zero job the longer ...

Yes. Which makes the right answer seem obvious. But unfortunately it seeming obvious does not make it feel easy.

Re: Anesau - Just Starting Out

Update, re: car insurance & bad drivers in my area - just got in my first ever car accident. I was hit from behind while stopped at a red light.

Dealing with insurance and the repairs shop is a massive pain. I aggressively do not care about the aesthetic-only damage and the monetary cost of fixing ...

Re: fish oil or real fish?

Fig 5 seems to be paywalled for non-academics. Alternate reference, please?

Here's an open access link. There are multiple copies of the study floating around, only some of which are paywalled.

ETA: apologies, I think bsog actually meant this study . The names are very similar, but the figure ...

Re: fish oil or real fish?

I didn't expect to come back into this conversation, but I'm obviously hooked (no pun intended?), so I did some further digging. I'm still not fully understanding how the literature supports the benefits of omega 3s to the extent that William Harris is claiming. I realize medical statistics is not ...

How much to care about ongoing security updates (phone)

[the other thread about Androids brought this to mind]

Hoping for a sober opinion from people who are also generally opposed to throwing away perfectly good electronics.

My smartphone is just about 6 years old now. It has a couple of quirks, but it's still fully functional. I could see myself ...

Pretty sure I have an arduino (+ beginner kit with random electronic components), a couple raspberry pis, and some pretty decent computer parts sitting around. Let me do a full inventory before committing, but I would probably be willing to swap for some of your cat 2s.

Re: Anesau - Just Starting Out

I return! It's been a while since I posted. I'm kind of eh on everything right now, so there's not much to add here. Sorry to visitors to the journal for a boring update, but (ideally) having snapshots of my actual life & progress will be useful to a future-me.

Having obligations hanging over me ...

Re: fish oil or real fish?

There's a lot of weird interactions with vitamins like that. My mother gets told she probably has cancer about every other year (though she never has actually had cancer); for some reason, taking extra vitamin E makes it stop looking like she has cancer. For chronic/intractable health problems ...

Re: fish oil or real fish?

Interesting! I looked around at the lit reviews for DHA/EPA in general; I thought I remembered a null / not statistically significant result last time I looked, but maybe I was over-indexed to the Chochrane review. It definitely looks like DHA/EPA are more important than I previously thought.

I'll ...
