Re: ERE Fest 2023: Ft Dirtbag

Beautiful! I was surprised to see the mountains here (and in @AH's white rock roof YT video). I had imagined it much flatter and desert-ier.

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst

another +1 for keeping up the podcast! It is one of my favorites. It feels like a how to guide for me right now - super relevant information and feels like a how-to guide almost. I too have listened to some episodes multiple times. I think one episode you talked about your goal of helping others and...

Re: How to calculate one's savings rate

My apologies for the comment on a 2 year old post, however I had the same question posed here and found an answer I like from Mr. Money Mustache. It's simple and helped me get my head wrapped around the concepts. https://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2015/01 ... net-worth/

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst

Storm killed our internet dish somehow (in addition to closing the pass). Have been without comms since Thursday evening. That, combined with the price hikes for starlink, have me thinking... How hard would it be to build a WoG here with no internet? A rural WoG with no car *and* no internet? I nee...

Re: ERE Fest 2023: Ft Dirtbag

Few random thoughts: I imagine I'll be flying into LA and then possibly train to Bakersfield. Would be into finding more creative/efficent/interesting/collaborative ways to travel portions of that. I'm also happy to cook and or wash dishes. I work in IT (well, IT Sales now) so I have some (aging) te...

Re: Sodatrain's Journal

Just cancelled my "favorite" AMEX. Fee was $450. Insane. Done with mixed emotions - which seems crazy. Feeling good, optimistic and like I'm making progress. At the same time... feeling like I'm going to miss the airline status / perks that came with it. But... should be traveling much les...

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst

Aaah. That makes sense. I actually looked up cottagecore just now. I see the connection to homesteading but clearly they are not the same thing. I remember their use of “aesthetic” a lot in the episode and I kind of dismissed their use of it as a currently in favor/trendy-ish word being used in a wa...

Re: Would you give your kids money for college or life?

Related to the cost of College and the perils of student loans/debt, the Dave Ramesy film Borrowed Future is excellent. I'm asking my oldest (Sr in HS) to watch it before he makes any decisions. It's available at least on Amazon Prime https://www.ramseysolutions.com/shows/borrowed-future-documentary

Re: Sodatrain's Journal

Quick update. I've been on the road a lot - balancing work, family, and sanity. Juggling the two worlds I straddle. (or is it 3?) Lots of time and energy on tracking my expenses - wow is it amazing to see how it all adds up. Second priority, after tracking expenses, is clearing out the CC debt. JFC ...

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst

Okay so this is good news, because this is along the lines of what I want to do. ERE for solarpunks. I've been hanging out in some solarpunk spaces recently and those folks could use some postconsumer praxis and systems thinking, imo. Potential thread hijack warning... I had an unexpected experienc...

Re: Sodatrain's Journal

Wow, it sounds like you've got a lot of interesting pieces already up and running. The place in Central America, lack of car ownership, decent income for now, some rental stuff. Sounds like a strong kit of parts you've got as you enter the ERE game. 1 Jacob = $7k, 1 Jacob Adjusted For Inflation (JA...

Re: Sodatrain's Journal

Not to mention as a divorced guy, it doesn't appear that visitation rights to his balls were part of the settlement agreement. Not sure I totally understand your comment - but wow is divorce expensive. And yet still worth it. Spousal Support / Alimony ended Sept 2022 (WOOOOOOO). One kid graduates/h...

Re: Jiimmy's Journal

Awesome stuff! Just read your whole journal. I'm new and learning...and love a lot of your spreadsheets. I think I'll be building some very similar! Especially the Expense, Income etc trackers year over year. Congrats on the PCT. My cousin just did that - something like that is on my todo list once ...

Awesome! I will do what I can to attend. Love the idea of immersing myself amongst all this expertise! Trying to think about managing the travel to be balanced with cost/time/work obligations and desires to slow travel but cant really yet!

Draft 2023 Manifesto and put it up. Here it is. Goal was: brevity!

Wow. This is amazing. 8-) I absolutely love it. I need to review it a bit more carefully, but you said a lot of what I am thinking and you did a much better job at saying it than I could have.

Re: The Education of Axel Heyst

These are my personal insights. 1. At the moment I don’t believe in the possibility of long term financial security over my lifetime. Medium term is about the longest planning horizon that makes sense to me, three to ten years. Beyond that, my confidence that just because I have some multiple of Co...

Sodatrain's Journal

* Couple quick edits to correct my use of Jacobs as a unit of measure (1 Jacob ~$7000USD, right?) Hey Folks- I made an introduction back in Sept 22 and was encouraged to start a journal. It's a new year with some timely inspiration from @AxelHeyst content, finally got the ERE book and off we go. I'm...
