Re: WL 5 > 6 MMMG

The Bittman book is great because it is organized by general principle, then specific examples as recipes. I think one thing it can do is show where gaps are in your general game -- but again, it seems like you have a bunch of recipes and techniques. I think you are a lot closer than you think. ETA ...

Re: WL 5 > 6 MMMG

However, cooking so you have leftovers that you can make into multiple different dishes is currently beyond my skill level, so even if I can see the potential flow, in practice, I probably need to increase my cooking skill level first before I have a yield of leftovers that can flow into other dish...

Re: Examples of ERE2.0 Lifestyles

Vinay Gupta wrote a fictional piece entitled The Unplugged that tries to give some shape to dropping out at a community-level. The way this discussion went so far has made me think about it.

Re: WL 5 > 6 MMMG

@ertyu That seems to me to be a promising series of epiphanies. I was looking at the yields and flows thread, and so I am reminded of this post by Jacob: https://forum.earlyretirementextreme.com/viewtopic.php?p=197332#p197332 In particular I am drawn to the chess analogy. Beginners only see moves. M...

Re: Let's talk about how to avoid darknetting ERE

So how about a section on this forum dedicated to learning each of these models. I have personally read most of them, but what that gives me is wissen level understanding -- not a full deep kenen understanding. To bridge the gap I probably need some time discussing each of them and saying the stupi...

Re: WL 5 > 6 MMMG

As a self proclaimed WL 6 (and working towards WL7), I would be much interested to contribute in this MMMG as an available resource. Thanks for coming in. Do you remember the times you would have felt you were WL 5, and what the process was like to get to WL 6? By this I am trying to get at mathive...

Re: WL 5 > 6 MMMG

I think this MMG could be incredibly useful for me. I'm not really sure which level I'm at, but I'd say I feel like I am mainly at 5, with some grasps of 6 (though not well enough to comfortably explain to anyone). I've been looking for support in progressing more to 6 without really knowing it. As...

Re: Let's talk about how to avoid darknetting ERE

In terms of this thread, the problem is that the chain is weakening at a certain point. WL5-6 to use jargon. As a WL 5 interested in moving up to 6, I'm particularly interested in this part of the chain. Thus, I've started this thread: https://forum.earlyretirementextreme.com/viewtopic.php?p=265206...

Re: WL 5 > 6 MMMG

First, open call... what are some good thread/journals from the past that were good examples of the move up to WL 6? Second, are there people willing to identify as WL 4 or 5 and is interested in the process of getting to WL 6? Chart: https://earlyretirementextreme.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/ERE...

WL 5 > 6 MMMG

Target audience: WL 4 and 5 who want to get to WL 6.

I am not going for the canonical MMG group limit of 8, so it's a massive mastermind group.

Also part of this experiment is to keep as much of it as possible in this thread.

Re: Let's talk about how to avoid darknetting ERE

The whole rest of the forum is where it's tricky. Sometimes a Master's topic is going along nicely and then some PhD nerd comes in and douses the thing with cold water.... or maybe it feels like a squad of nerds come in and commandeers the conversation? I think that hits the nail on the head for th...

Re: Let's talk about how to avoid darknetting ERE

From my perspective, it feels like the MMGs and heavy use of shorthand are all the same thing -- the forum's version of secret handshakes and sub-clubs that are meant to give other people the impression that they aren't welcome. It seems that way to me as well. From the vantage point of someone who...

Re: Another Brick in the Wall (Part One)

Unfortunately, that is the technique I am buggered up -- well, with the aggressive 7 TPI saw I bought [1]; I had okay results on a test piece with the repeated flips with my pull saw. In the trilemma, the cheapness is locked in -- I'm not getting any more new tools for this project -- but I am runni...

Re: Another Brick in the Wall (Part One)

I tried theanimal's suggestion of working a bit of making into my morning routine. I liked it greatly, but I become ill for several days, and then we got to the Thanksgiving Break. Woodworking =========== I have a project that called for some 2-by-2s. But when I went to my big box home improvement c...

Re: Let's talk about how to avoid darknetting ERE

One thing I see myself doing on my ERE darknets... is relaxing into posting lightly and showing more of my personality. I let my hair down when dark in ways that I don't here on the forum. This is a really strong advertisement for the process of darknets taking over. I actually assumed the opposite...

Re: Ken Isaacs, Urban Nomad

Isaac's book is a real trip. If you can get used to the weird prose, it would serve as a good introduction to a system of building. I find the prose itself amusing with ideas in the spirit of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, with dashes of Buckminster Fuller, but more breathless, almost li...

Re: Another Brick in the Wall (Part One)

Both the network-less schooling and the shop stories came together today, as well as my Akrasia Fund. First, I bought the Walmart store brand[1] orbital (but not randomly so) sander, leaving me with Akrasia Fund: $54 (I also recently bought and enjoyed some booze). I sanded down the crappy gavel I m...

Re: Another Brick in the Wall (Part One)

@theanimal That is a good idea, and I'll try to implement it, though my mornings are when I try to get in exercise and chores for the household -- both of which I don't feel I am efficient enough at as is. But following your idea and putting on my timer for doing things in the shop might more reliab...

Re: Another Brick in the Wall (Part One)

Work ==== Hmmm. I kind of thought more interesting things would happen as a result of a week without networks working in the school district. Still, I will carry on with some notes from the week. It turns out they were somehow able to pull up student rosters and print roll sheets. And good thing the...
